Tyre choice London to Cambridge

Doing the London to Cambridge on my hard tail mountain bike and wanted to make my life a little easier and fit some slicker tyres can anyone recommend some?

I am currently running a cross country tyre 26x1.95.

I take it you mean on the road? I have used Schwalbe City Jet's in the past, cheap, reasonably easy rolling, and better than trying to do tarmac miles on nobblies!

I can recommend Schwalbe Marathon Plus if you never want a puncture. 5,000 miles on my road bike and no puncture.

I am considering changing to Continental Ultra Gatorskins as they will be nearly as puncture proof but run faster.

Gatorskins, for the man who hates his fillings and loves sliding.. Really don't like then, Vittorio's ride much better and seem equally puncture resistant.

But if you can borrow a road bike you'll find it far, far easier.

I've used Continental Sport Contact and Schwalbe Big Apple road tyres on a MTB.

Sport Contacts are fastest - but I found them a bit scary in the wet - and the sidewalls failed when there was still plenty of rubber left. I wouldn't use them again as commuter tyres, but if I had to do a single long road ride on a MTB these would be my choice. You can get them in 1.6 and 1.1 widths - I used 1.6, 1.1 would be very narrow.

Big Apple isn't quite as fast - but can be run with lower pressure and still give good rolling resistance so are more comfy and good for dual use for road and (non muddy) rough ground. I have much more confidence in them in the wet. I will buy these again as commuter typres when they wear out.
