Two Canyon bikes, which one?

Trying to decide on my next mountain bike and have been told that in terms of value for money and the hardware, you don't get much better than Canyon.

Just trying to decide between these two. I'll only be using for general riding and some off-road, but no comps or anything serious, just something to mess around on...though I do like a fancy bit of kit.

I want something light, of which these two are 10kg and 10.5kg so nothing to them, which is why I've included a carbon offering, though not sure if carbon frames are the way to go? I like the thought of only two main cogs but that is only available on the carbon version.

Any opinions welcome.

When you say general riding and some off road, exactly what sort of terrain? Carbon is light, but I really can't see the benefits unless you are racing.

Should add, I want a hardtail only, don't get on with rear suspension frames.

Hadn't noticed the carbon one is sold out, but the comparison still remains I guess.

Terrain is just road, grass, trails and maybe some woodland, but nothing heavy, no rocks, no competitions, no thrill seeking.

Strictly speaking a cheap bike would probably do for me, but I want something a bit fancier than that

Either would be fine for what you describe, but what is driving your decision between those two, they are not that similar price wise?

Canyon are excellent value for money (I have 2), but if you want something a bit special would it be work considering something more "boutique"?

You could also have a look at bikes with 853 frames, or maybe a build around a Ti frame?

I don't know, I asked the question on here about which bike some time ago and the majority response was that Canyon bikes offer the best value for money in the £1k range which was my initial starting point.

They are excellent spec for the money and that carbon version is stupendously light!

I wouldn't get too hung up on carbon though, some carbon framed bikes are actually heavier than comparable prices alu models.

My mate is after something in the sub 1.5k bracket and we keep coming back to the Scott scale 950 29er. £1350 and weigh in at circa 11kg. You're splitting hairs at this level and it comes down to the rider.

I'm not sure why I'm so hung up on weight, I guess it is because I would still like to do some road riding and found my hybrid to be excellent for this, but rubbish off road, so I want a MTB that is also light so the difference is minimal. I need to sell the hybrid to buy a decent MTB. The non-carbon Canyon I mentioned is only 10.5kg which is less than my hybrid, which is truly amazing.

Do Scott offer good comparable bikes then? I'm let to believe that 29'ers are not really that great and some what of a fad. I was thinking about a normal 26'er to be honest.

Well I've got a Scott Scale Elite 2012 29er....bought at a discount a few months ago given it's last years model. It's the same weight as the 950 at around 11kg.

I came off a Specialized Rockhopper Comp 26er and the Scott is massively faster....it's obviously a combination of wheel size plus it's a just a better/lighter bike but the difference is night and day. On the other hand....one of the lads we go out with rides a 26in full suss boardman and absolutely destroys me, everywhere...I'm not that shabby either!!

Given the choices of the Canyon vs Scott Scale vs antyhing else of similar spec/price then just buy the one you like the look of the best....with you at the helm they will all be just as quick as each other I reckon.

I do think 29in wheels roll faster on smoother surfaces compared to 26in. The other option is 27.5in....just to confuse things further.
