Lock suggestions.

Folks,

I'm on a train back home with my lovely, lovely full sus Cube bike, which was stolen in 2011. I don't think it's going to be practical for it to live in the flat with me like my road bike does, so with heavy heart I am going to have to store it in my block of flats' 'secure' bike store.

Last time they angle ground through the bike stand, so I'm keen to get the best lock I can.

Bike cost me between £0 and £200 to buy back depending on whether insurance ever cash my cheque so I don't want to spend lots of money. I don't care about insurance approval and it doesn't need to be remotely portable. Therefore, any recommendations on locking items? Don't mind industrial chain/scooter lock etc if it's cheap and does the job.

The top models of D-lock (Abus Granit / Kryptonite New York) are usually the only ones worth recommending - £50 or so. But if the tealeaves cut through the actual rack without anyone noticing, whether it's worth it or not is debatable.

I have a kryptonite new york forggetabout it mini (60 quid off amazon down from 100) for the frame an evo mini (25 quid off amazon or thereabouts) for wheel 1 and a on guard bulldog mini U lock (12 quid down from 40 on wheelies website) for wheel 2

Should be as secure as the best D-Locks (definitely harder to cut than a bike rack!) the only downside is that it's less portable.

That's the sort of thing I'm after. Good price too. I already have a portable D-lock when out and about but that would seem to do the job at home.

Admittedly last time they used an angle-grinder, but if I could wrap that a few times around the bike stand it makes their job a lot harder. Might also invest in a ground anchor.

Actually, by the same token, I suspect 2/3 of these would frustrate them sufficiently to not bother! £10 a pop...

The only thing to watch is insurance certification - if your house insurance requires a certain Sold Secure category then make sure the lock ticks the relevant box.

TBH I'm not going to bother with insurance again, it cost me sod all to buy back and the last claim has already hammered my premiums for the last 2yrs.

a decent pair of bolt cutters will get through all but the thickest of chains which is why I didnt bother with them. I much prefer a several mini D locks: i) they cant get a car jack in there to break it off and ii) they can only get to it with an angle grinder which is v noisy and risky

I wouldn't settle with anything less than an Abus Granit lock for my bikes. They are the best.

I have an Abus Bordo X Plus for my bikes for when I go out and am looking to get a Granit chain too.
