MTB Grips

I have changed my grips from the factory fit Giant things to some aftermarket affairs.

I have always struggled with painful hands when riding - the 'pad' below my thumb starts to get tight and ache after about an hours riding - especially if my ride involves a lot of pull ups/manuals bunny hops etc.

I have fairly big hands and I reckon that the grips I've had up until now have been too thin - lacking in circumference- and make my hands hurt.

Ideally I'd like some 1980's BMX fat soft mushroom type grips - but I don't think
they make them anymore


What do PH recommend in something a bit fatter and more comfortable?

I use Ergon GP1's, They are shaped to support the palm of the hand and help to reduce wrist problems,

My Missus wears through grips in about 2 months, does the same with her Golf putter, bloody mentalist.

I have these (or something that looks very similar) on my commuting steed.

While my commute is rarely more than 30 minutes, I find them very comfortable.

be careful with grips that have a flange - like a bmx grip - they can foul your gear shifters

Have you tried Specialized Body Geometry gloves? They have a pad that takes pressure off the radial ulnar nerve; certainly helped me.

I use ODI Ruffian grips with no issues at all.

Ritchey WCS Neoprene grips nice and comfortable, light and cheap £15 tops.

I think Ergons are great but I'm not sure the angle which the instructions show for installation is necessarily the best angle for technical riding. I was told to keep my wrists down a bit but Ergon want your wrists up a bit. I think I've found a good compromise though.

Got some Odi X-Trainers which have a lot more giving than lots of grips. Padded gloves will help

Superstar do some good ones, I have them on my bike. They look like ordinary grips but they're a larger diameter, they lock on too, link to the grip bit... http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cP... You can also buy the locking rings if you don't have them

Excellent - thanks. At a fiver a go I can hardly go wrong and I can take the locking rings off my current set.

This will be my next port of call if the Superstar ones don't hit the spot. I current have some Lizardskin Peaty grips. I can only assume Steve Peat has very small hands.

And if all else fails I will take a look at these. Do these work well for demanding techinical riding rather than commuting/touring/bimbling along?

I use them on my Giant Trance X, I've had no problems doing any type of riding with them, they are good on technical climbs as the extra size gives you a good grip to keep the front wheel down. After using them for a while any other grip just feels 'wrong'

It may be worth looking at the GX1 too. I put GP1s on first and then GX1 which are a bit less of a handfull but still deliver the benefit of the wings.

No they're crap for technical riding. Ergon do however, do a more rounded version which is better suited to that use. I have a set and they're very good. Specialised also do a BG grip although it's not a lock on so can slip - unless you hairspray / spray mount it on.

The afore mentioned Lizard Skins north shore are also very comfortable and work well if you have bigger hands. I actually prefer the LS grips to the Ergons I have to say; but grips are a very personnel thing.
