Creaking from left hand pedal (MTB)

I've noticed when I put any pressure into the left hand pedal it creaks/clicks on the downward stroke. (Cube attention - 09). Its definitely getting worse. I presume this is coming from the bottom bracket, I checked to see if there is any play in it but it all seems solid. Easiest option would be to just take it to a LBS but to be honest I'd like to get my hands dirty and look to learning how to fix things myself.
The bikes done approx. 650 miles since I bought it in 09 and its never had any services etc, although I did replace the pedals recently as I thought perhaps it was coming from that as the left hand side pedal no longer span round freely.
Any pointers?

Grab the end of the crank arm and try to wobble it in-and-out towards the frame, any movement and there's a problem, if it's equal both side it's the BB, if it's just one side it's likely to be a lose or worn pedal arm. As it's the left / non-drive side I'd guess it's the pedal arm.

If its a square taper Bottom Bracket, that could be the answer. Square tapered ones are prone to working loose over time and making a creaking noise. The only anwser is to keep tightening it back up.
Then save up for something like this:

Though that would mean you'd have to change cranks and chain-rings at the same time.

Statistically, 97.8% of such noises come from pedals (including new ones).
