Has anyone got first hand experience of DA 9000 groupset? The Ultegra 6600 that I've currently got is coming to the end of its usable life (the drivetrain is well worn) so I'm thinking of upgrading.

Before I pull the (pretty hefty!) trigger, I'd like to know what people think who've used it.

Not used it myself, BUT given the soon-to-be-released Ultegra (number unknown) has all the trickle-down tech from DA 9000 (inc. 11sp, cables, shifters, brake callipers etc)), would it be worth going for that? Somewhat cheaper, all the tech, barely any heavier.

You will need to change the rear wheel (or at lest the free hub) too!

I'd probably go for Ultegra Ui2 over 9000 TBH. IMHO this is the sweet spot for groupos. 99% of the effectiveness of Dura Ace Di2 at a fraction of the price. If you've not tried Di2 I'd suggest you do so before plumping for mechanical.

Had it fitted to my S5 this week but have not ridden it yet, going out tomorrow so if you can hang on till then I will let you know how I got on. I have changed from Sram Force as I hated it! As others have said you will need a new freehub to take the 11 speed cassette.

NOt a fan of the Di2. Tried it for a few months and went back to mechanical. My cycling buddy on the other hand, loves the Di2. the new DA9000 is fantastic. brakes are better the shifts are much more positive.

Cheers for the comments. I'd love to get DI2 but the thought of the cables and battery having to be external puts me off. I've got a ti frame and don't fancy drilling it either. Plus DI2 will add weight whereas I'm always looking to save it smile

I have not ridden Di2 but am sure its not 100% fail safe yet, at the end of the day who wants to have to make sure their bike is fully charged before they go out cycling, not me.

Cant wait till the morning to get on my DA9000 and give it a whizz smile

It's evident that you haven't used it. Battery life is ridiculously good. The majority get 1500/2000 km between charges (obviously it depends on use) and you get a warning light for low battery so it's easy to know when to stick it on the charger for a 90 minute charge to full.

No one clearly. Just as well no one has to...

As above, battery life is a total non issue - they last seemingly forever between charges. Weight (if I may be so bold) is irrelevant to the likes of you, and I. If it's good enough for the pros etc. There are several internal battery solutions available for sensible money.

Interesting comments re 9000 brakes. Definitely fancy giving them a try.

Only passing my comments chaps, no need to get funny about it... didn't realise the battery lasts for that long!

What happens if the unit fails whilst your out, say for instance the battery suddenly dies even if its charged, only asking as batteries do fail sometimes so do small motors too. Does the unit go into a fail safe mode where you can still change gear or are you stuck in whatever gear it dies in?

I've not charged mine yet and I've owned it since the end of Jan smile

I don't think there are any more failure modes than a mechanical groupset tbh.

Each to their own, but I find the ability to have pinpoint accurate shifting while out of the saddle and mashing the pedals outweighs all else. Smooth shifting mid sprint.. Who'd have thought it!

There is a limp mode, it won,t shift into the big ring but you can still shift the cassette. There is a battery indicator test of 0.5 secs before riding anyway. Oh, and the new DA9070 does come with an internal battery option.

Ui/Di more expensive to replace when you bin it. Perhaps when they become a sane price though I'll look at them biggrin
