Wide-fit SPD Shoes

I’ve been using some mid-range Shimano shoes on my road bike for the last year or so, but on a ride of over 30 mins or so, the squeeze on my wide feet is just too much. I persevered as I thought maybe they’d stretch (I usually buy Vans or DCs that do) but of course they’re basically hard plastic, so little chance of that happening.
I need shoes that will take a standard Shimano SPD (MTB-style, not an SPD-SL) cleat and be able to walk in properly without looking like a tool, but they must be wide. Any recommendations?

I've heard Specialized are pretty good for wide feet, although if anything my feet are on the narrow side, so can't speak from experience.

Oh and if budget allows Sidi do a range for big/wide feet called 'Mega'.

I have wide feet too, and use the Specialized Tahoes. On my second pair now, been going for about 5 years

I've heard that Specialized come up wide too. I wear Specialized Body Geometry MTB shoes, and they are very comfortable, and easy to walk in too.

Don't buy DHB as they come up very narrow. I don't have particularly wide feet, and have just had to return some DHB road shoes which I bought as they're too narrow. I take a 43, bought a 44 as I heard they come up narrow, and they're still too tight! Awaiting some size 45s to try out!

IIRC Specialized offer "wide fit" versions of their shoes. My recently-acquired Pro Roads are just that

I've literally just this week bought some Specialized Tahoe Sport shoes as I too needed something with a wider fit. I'm a uk11 but bought a euro 47 and they are fine. They look a bit like a Merrel trainer, so no disco slippers here. You can walk fine in them with a shimano cleat and it doesn't really scrape on the floor.

My Mavic MTB shoes are quite wide, I wear sealskins in them with room to spare

Spech and Sidi do wide ranges.

I love my Sidi dragons. 3 years on just had a rebuild and look and most important feel as great as ever.

I have the s-works shoes and they accommodate my wide feet just fine. I also have some Shimano m161 shoes and for width they are even bigger. The Shimano are very comfortable but heavy.

I have heard elsewhere that Northwave are a nice wide fit.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'll have a look at Northwave first as I've tried a few Specialized shoes and they seemed even narrower than my current Shimanos.

Anyone had experience of Decathlon's shoes? Or anything available in CostCo (as we've just had both open here recently)?

I got some northwave shoes. Seemed excellent value and looked the business. However when I got then the fit was not great, slightly to small, however the size up was too big. I have wide feet and ended up getting some s works. I know they are expensive but they are well worth it, very comfy and fit perfectly.

Curious as to why nobody has pointed out that Shimano do a wide fit?

I've had a few pairs of Shimanos over the years and never had trouble with them - and I consider myself to have quite wide feet.

As mentioned above, I had to go up two sizes in my DHB shoes to get a pair to fit, but only up one size in my Shimano winter boots.

The biggest problem I had with the DHBs I've got is that the sole is agrresively patterned for off road use, so the cleats don't scrape the ground, but it's also plastic.

This means that on my daily commute (which involves station platforms) they're lethal. I've gone smack on my arse twice now just trying to walk in them on slightly damp/cold smooth tiles.

I'd considered getting another pair of DHBs as it looks like they've moved to rubber soles and I need a new pair of summers as the straps have gone, but to be honest, I think this time I'm going to go into a shop rather than t'internet as I'm fed up ordering stuff and having to send it back as it's too small.
