Before my son had one I used to have keep stopping and waiting for him to catch up, now it's the other way round!

I shopped around, and ended up with a Merida Dakar 620. Great bike. Light, and quick. My sons is up for sale, as he has moved to a 24" Scott Scale.

Islabikes are very good according to those dads I know who have bought them for their kids.

My son has a Specialized Hotrock 20 which I can very much recommend.

Round my way those seem to be the two most popular choices for those looking for a bit of quality, sensible weight, good brakes, good gears.

+1 for Islabikes. Super quality, reasonably priced for what they are, great customer service, and you're supporting a British company run by someone who is an actual cyclist. What's not to like...
