Convert to rigid fork

I've realised that while I love my road bike, I'm scared to leave it anywhere for fear of it getting nicked. So trips which I could easily accomplish by bike are getting done in the car, which is very lazy indeed.
So I've recalled my old hybrid from my mate who was using it for trips to the gym, and have decided to give it a bit of attention to turn it into a decent urban assault vehicle. It currently looks like this:
One of the things which holds it back from being an enjoyable steer at the moment is the fork. It's a Suntour something-or-other with 63mm of travel, which weighs a ton and is basically useless. So I'm keen to replace it with a rigid fork. What size of fork do I need to buy? A quick Google suggests that people recommend a 420mm fork for replacing 80mm travel suspension, so do I need around a 400mm job? I was thinking something like a Surly Cross Check, but they have the wrong brake mounts (Mine are v-brakes).

This place does alu and carbon rigid forks, for V-brakes and disc brakes.
I have the carbon forks on my Specialized Hardrock. No complaints so far and they've covered about 800 miles.
