What MTB for the GF - Recommendations Sought!

GF is looking to get into cycling. I'm a bit out of touch with what brands to go with etc as i last bought a bike 10 years back
She's 5ft11 and wanting a xc bike that she can also ride on the road occasionally. She wants to buy through the cycle 2 work scheme and up to £800 is the budget. Doesn't necessarily need to be woman specific.
Anyone in the know that can make some recommendations? Thanks.

CX bikes can be very twitchy and for a beginner looking for an xc mtb are probably unsuitable, to ride a CX bike fast and safely on loose surfaces/singletrack does take some experience. without suspension you have to pick your line much earlier and commit to it as there is nothing to absorb the wrong line.
Dont discount a female model based on her height alone though. Manufacturers have finally cottoned on to the fact that women are built different to men and thus a six foot woman is still different in proportion to a six foot man!. Female geometry will cater for the longer legs/short torso female body measurements thus have small seat to stem measurements making it a comfier, less stretched ride.
For £800 though, I'd seriously consider the Specialised Myka, Scott Contessa or - and I know its not female sepcific but.... the charge faucet a well spec'd xc bias 29"er that looks nice and purposeful...
