Following on from my other thread about purchasing a hardtail as a 2nd bike for some xc riding, I'm now having 2nd thoughts about the type of riding I will be doing after a really enjoyable ride out on my Zesty last night.

However it's become apparent over my last couple of rides that I need a new bottom bracket and the fork needs servicing. Now I've decided that if I do the above then there are a couple of other upgrades I'd want to do - XT shadow+ derailleur (fed up of the rattling chain) which requires new shifters, upgrade cranks/rings/cassette at same time, reverb, and a full strip down service probably wouldn't go amiss as I've ridden it all through the winter.

Now I've estimated the cost of all the above at about £800. So the question is do I keep my Zesty or sell it as is, assuming I'd probably get around £1000 for it.

For that amount of 'investment' I would sell and buy a new(er) bike

Glad somebody thinks the same as me laugh

There seem to be some lovely 2nd hand (but often less than 12 months old) bikes around from anywhere between £1800 and £2500. Many of them with the components I want.

I start my new job end of May which is when I'll see how often I can get to a trail centre, and therefore where my money should be going. I'll just have to put up with the rattling and creaking until then I think rolleyes

New BB is easy and cheap, fork service - that I'd leave to the pro's.

Seems that the expense is in the new rear mech - is there not a cheaper way of fixing the rattling chain than replacing most of the gearset?

Prices are based on fork going to TF or Mojo, BB to be done by LBS. I'm not attempting any of this myself, I always break stuff.

I've already added a Blackspire stinger to try and help with the rattling, but it doesn't seem to have done much tbh.

The rattling was annoying last night, so I don't want to spend out on the BB and fork, only for that to still drive me nuts. It sounds like I've just got married and I'm dragging a load of tin cans behind me!

Fair enough - I'm just thinking that the rattle sounds like something wrong/broken rather than an upgrade issue - should be able to get a reasonably quiet chainline on pretty much anything.

Some slap to be expected when it's rough - lizard skin / similar on the chainstay makes less noise. Could be chain too long, RD tension spring knackered, B-screw could need some adjustment. Depends what you *want* to do, but I'd think a half competent bike mechanic should be able to sort the chainline issues for a lot less than upgrading the mech - I'm assuming that a mech, shifters and all that jazz makes up a rather significant portion of that 800, that's all smile

You make a good point, although I'm going to need to google "RD tension spring knackered, B-screw could need some adjustment" to understand what you're talking about wink Am I just expecting too much for there to be no rattling when I'm bouncing down the rough stuff?

I've got a cover over the chainstay already, but I think most of the rattle is coming from the chain hitting the front derailleur so perhaps that is more of a maintenance issue?? The bottom of the chain has less 'flex' presumably due to the Stinger.

The clutch mech etc added up to about £280 not including fitting.

Sorry smile

If it's coming from the front mech, there's probably adjustment needed - that shouldn't really rub at any point. When it's really rough (as in big hits / blurred vision!), expect some various rattlings, but it shouldn't be sounding like you're towing cans.

It might be worth getting a bike shop / clued up mate to look over it before pulling the trigger on any of the extras. At least that way you should know what the score is..

The video on the c-guide page at least illustrates what goes on - frankly I prefer the low tech/low cost solution; a cover on the chainstay so it doesn't batter the paint / clank too much and live with it!

I had a look at those Bionicon devices before and then ended up fitting a Blackspire Stinger instead.

This is a very noobie question, but if the bottom bracket is creaking when I pedal, would it also creak when I'm going downhill (not pedalling) but with all my weight on the pedals rather than the seat?

I was trying to listen more carefully tonight while I was riding, and it sounds like the same noise that I get when I'm pedalling.
