Rear cassette replacement

It's only a fairly narrow range five speed cassette on there at the moment and there isn't a huge amount of width between the rear dropouts - about 12cm and 4.5-5cm between the edge of the wheel and the left hand drop out.

And I kindly appreciate responses of the MTFU kind as well.

Just noticed my very useful tiny teapot and kettle on the saddle. Every bike should have them...

My recommendation would be to move your bread bin closer to your toaster (or vice-versa). It would make much more sense than the current positioning, and would save leaving a trail of crumbs all along your worktop.

I am unable to offer any advice on your cassette query, but I hope this helps.

I would doubt that a 7 speed would fit

A quick read of Sheldon appears to suggest that the 7 speed would be 6mm wider. Will depend on your axle width whether it will fit or not.

The width of your cassette won't be your biggest problem. The rear mech, probably won't clear the larger sprockets at the back, and the amount of difference in teeth between the biggest and smallest will probably also be outside the amount for the rear mech also.

Finally got this sorted. I'm sure that you will sleep well tonight in that knowledge.

Bought a 6-speed cassette from Decathlon, which still offered a useful extension of the lower range while keeping the highest gear the same. Tried one LBS in Worcester and he didn't have the correct tool to remove the old cassette but recommended another - Lewis's. Great old shop under a railway arch and full old bikes in various states of dismantlement, piles of tools and components overflowing on workbenches and he had it fitted within the hour, along with a regrease, packing the full quota of bearings, new chain and gear set up. All for £30.

Tried it out last night and it is smooooothe!

How many teeth have you added to the rear?

Phew! I'll sleep well now safe in the knowledge that you are sleeping well...or is that too circular?

I've gone from a 14/24 to a 14/28 - I'm hoping those extra four will make all the difference!
