Ok, so I've got a dose of upgradeitis for my bike. And a year after I bought it the shiny white steed is still rolling on its OEM "Maddux" rims.
If I wanted to buy something with alleged aero benefits, potential weight reduction and the incalculable speed and awesomeness increase of having new and shiny stuff, what would be a good way to go? Not a huge budget... but I assume anything bought specifically would be an upgrade on the standard rims... not that there's anything wrong with them as such.
Looking at the Shim RS30s on Ribble at the moment... £130 the pair, 30mm rim height, just over 2000g inc skewer. Any other plans?
Btw: is rim height measured from the outer edge, or the start of the 'fairing', inside the brake track? Current rims are 24mm from the edge to the inside...

I bought a pair of RS30 from PX back in Jan. Very good VFM at the same price Ribble is offering.
They noticeably hold speed better at 20mph+. Which is a shame because I don't spend long there.
Look good though.
Planet X's AL30 are also an option in this price bracket. £20 more but 300g lighter. Didn't like the decals though.

I had a set of RS30's until I broke the rear wheel and depending on what sort of riding you do they are fine, but they do suffer from cross-winds on breezy days, and are probably heavier than your current rims - so will slow you down on the ups! Totally agree with TKF, once they are up to speed they are easy enough to keep there, as long as you are on a flat road or pointing down a hill. Also, they do look good for the money....
To get aero's and a weight loss you are going to have to spend quite a bit of wedge, and are straying into carbon territory! Personally I am not a huge fan of aero's for 'normal' riding, I can see their benefits on TT's, flat-ish road racing etc but you are adding weight to the worst possible place on your bike!
If you are looking for an upgrade on the wheels but don't want to spend a fortune there are a few options. I had Maddux rims on my CX bike and am sure they were made of pressed tin foil, so anything will feel like an upgrade!!
I am a bit of a fan of RS80 C24's but they are around the £300 mark, but they weigh in at 1,450 gms - you really will notice the difference on climbs, and just generally pushing the bike along the road!
Personally I would set a budget first and then go looking - you could do a lot worse than the RS30's but they are not light!
