Any idea what this beast would be like for long road rides?

I would use it mainly for offlroad day trips, but have a long distance road tour coming up and wonder how the fat tyres will wear on tarmac?...the frame will take rack and panniers easily enough... Would you fancy doing 100+ road miles a day on this? I have a good road bike that I use for long tours, but the the Krampus looks like a lot more fun!

No chance! It's a lovely bike, but for 100 mile road rides I'd go for a proper road bike everytime

If you want a solid and comfy mile muncher, have a look at the Salsa Fargo...

Last year my brother and I did an easy going 55 mile ride.. As it was on a flat course, he decided to take his road tyred mountain bike. To this day, he still regrets that decision. He was dropped by very occasional cyclists, and I sent the day waiting for him at the top of hills.

In a word NO. I don't think I'd enjoy 25 off road miles on that. Worse still, it looks awful. Just my opinion, to be fair, but you wouldn't get me near that thing on any kind of long tarmac route. Wholly unsuitable tool for the job.

I've done the Vatternrunden (186 miles in a day around a lake in Sweden) on a full sus MTB (spesh epic) with road tyres. It was utter purgatory taking 5 hours longer than on a road bike. The ONLY reason you'd do it is because you lost a bet or want to make it as hard as possible (I lost a bet!)

Ok, so I will stick to using my Specialized Roubaix Elite for the road trips then

I'm still going to buy a Krampus though... fancy getting back in to offroad cycling and, well, that bike looks like so much fun ;-)
