I am off to Tenerife this week and was wondering what the general opinion was on gearing. I normally run 50-34 with a 23-11 or 25-12 around the Chilterns but do have a 28-12 cassette as an option. Ability wise I am an average 3rd cat. I would say I am a better sprinter than climber but I guess the reality is I am just 'average' up hills biggrin

Checking around the sites quite a few places are recommending a triple, the guy I am going with is hiring one out there but is a little bit below my level. The 28 cassette jumps down to a 24 which is a bit naff so I am erring on taking the 25 on the bike and the 28 in case I struggle. The 12 tooth cog is going to run out of speed probably but it's a bit of a risk not having the 25...unless I build a cassette out of the two dropping the 11 tooth into the 25?

What do you guys think?

34/25 will be fine

People said I would struggle with a 40-25 in Majorca (which doesn't have quite as long climbs as Tenerife it must be said) but it was fine for 90% of the time, if I had my time again a 40/27 would have been better for Colabra.

Will be doing Sa Calobra at the end of April so thanks for that. Currently running a standard 53/39 with 11-25 on the back, might take a spare 27 for the back smile

Easy, up to the Teide Summit, back down, then back up again every day for 6 days.

Out of interest okgo - do you have some of your Majorca routes mapped out that you'd be able to send to me please?

check my strava, also look at Jake Martins Strava, he's been out there for about 6 weeks, so between us, there are plenty of routes you can use.

Teide is definitely the biggy but I have been looking at the North of the Island as well, hired a car for the week so we can pick and choose where to go. The bloke I am going with has been taking the p*ss all month about his fantastic weight loss due to jogging. Whilst he has been messing about with that I have been steadily improving power on the bike....payback is going to be sweet, I can't wait biggrin
