I could nick a load of bikes from my bikeshed at work - so many only secured by a wheel - some by the front, some by the back - bit of mix and matching, and I'd be away.

Much easier method is just walk into a Decathlon store and say you have come to pick up [insert bike here] and they just hand it over! Recently had my Giant Defy and Scott Scale serviced by them and both times, they didn’t even check my details. Someone could have paid £14.99 at the till and walked out with them!

Why is this police officer spending days playing dress up robbers instead of catching the actual thieves. We know how easy it is to nick a bike, the only thing we know is impossible is for the police to catch a thief.

Is it too much to ask that they stop dicking about and catch a criminal?

Talk about missing the point!

The purpose of this "stunt" is to get news coverage for the issue of bystanders not helping police, as they neither intervened nor reported the robber with a description.

The aim is that more of the public will "think twice" if they see this happen, and hopefully be more likely to act. As a result the police have more of the crimes reported in a timely manner and as such they stand a better chance of recovering property and catching criminals.

Crap- the police will specifically tell you not to get involved.
To be honest I am not sure I would put myself in a position where an irate bike thief could swing bolt cutters at me.

It was pretty obvious from the report that the action the police want you to take is to dial 999 and tell them that a bike theft is occurring. No one is asking you to get all VBRJ on their asses.
