MTB Chainrings how to choose?

I need a new granny and middle chain ring for my 10 x 3 set up, so what should I look for and how do I figure out if they are 10 speed compatible as not all the online bike shops list this and as much as I should go to my LBS I would prefer to get the part and fit it myself.
The work bike guru says go for steel but as he sometimes aims jokes at those not hot on Campagnola, SRAM and shimano's full catalogue and range.

What cranks are you currently running (SRAM/Shimano/Raceface etc)?

You will need to check that you buy rings with the correct BCD and number of bolts for the crank spider (4 or 5). BCD explanation here

Steel v alloy is a bit of a personal choice and there are pro's and con's against each, personally I run alloy Raceface setup on one of my MTB's and a single hardened alloy middleburn ring on my other. Most of the manufacturers have a compatibility matrix on their website, so if you know what you currently have you should be able to find a replacement part number on their website. Middleburn have a good reputation.

As a matter of interest why are you changing your current rings?

Changing the current middle and potentially the granny as well as I have snapped a tooth on the granny and bent them on my middle ring christ only knows how but I suspect ham fisted changes and poor mechanical sympathy.#

The spec for my bike says:
Chainset:

OK, as far as I can tell from the SRAM web site your current chainrings are 6061 alloy, small ring has a 64mm BCD and middle and large rings have a 104mm BCD with a 4 bolt arrangement (kinda standard setup).

The rings on this page should be fine (SRAM and Truvativ are the same co), but if in doubt give the shop a call before ordering them;

Or, Wiggle, Chainreaction etc have complete sets of 3 x rings - slightly more expensive but if I were going to replace 2 rings out of a 3 ring setup I would probably do the lot at once.
