What tool for this?

What tool do I need to put this bottom bracket nut back on?

Tried a spanner on the other side but it started to break the corners of the nut.

If you havent got a big enough spanner, you could try gently tapping with a large flat screw driver and mallet - swapping sides between strikes

So the answer seems to be 'a spanner'

I'll see if I can find one that's long enough not to crack the squared edges of the nut

they look like they should grip the flats better and have the length to span the whole nut.

The Aldi tool kit as a bottom bracket tool in it. If you can still find one in your local store.

They do make a special cut out spanner for these, if it is particularly tight, secure the spanner to the cup, with a large pair of washers and a bolt through where the axle goes, so the tool then can't slip.
