Which flat pedals??

Hi All,

I am looking for some really top quality flat pedals (9/16). (I am not interested in ones with clips)

If I could please get some views on any that are excellent quality, are super-light, relatively grippy and low maintenance I would greatly appreciate it. I don’t want to say price is no object but I don’t mind paying a bit more for something really good.

I had these on my full suspension for 4 years and I didnt really look after them. I sold the bike a couple of weeks ago and other than the finish rubbing off they were as good as new.

Or DMR V12's and those Nukeproof proton look super sticky too..

OP make sure you have some quality shoes like FiveTen's, if your foot slips off pedals with studs/pins, it hurts much.

Superstars. Tough as old boots, slim platform, nice and grippy.

And suggest 'Five Tens' to finish it off.

Great, thanks all so far, am liking all the suggestions. The superstars look cool, the Ultra Mag Ti axle upgrade sounds like what I am looking for too, cant get a whole lot lighter than 260g for flat pedals, not bad.

Ok final question (my short list is 2/3):

Superstar Ultra Mag with Ti Axle, or Nukeproof Proton with Ti axle??

Or KCNC Steady (Ti), ones I have been looking at for a while but cant find out much about them

Can only comment on the superstars... they are highly rated by MBR and other sites/mags in the reviews, I give mine no maintence, they get bashed on rocks, tree stumps etc and are still as good as day one. The only point is after two years abuse, the colour has faded/worn a bit on the outside of the pedal. I would definately buy again.

+1 for Superstar. Two bikes run Nanos and the DH rig runs the (even better IMHO) Mags. Great pedals.

Kind of depends on what sort of riding you get up too I guess.

The new Shimano Saints are pretty awesome and if they're like the MX30's they're going to be pretty much unbreakable! I'll be getting some when my finally die.

Running the Superstar bolt through pins now and I'm very impressed, the coloured coating comes off pretty easy but they've been great and have the perfect amount of grip with my Teva Links they're dead easy to strip and grease with a 9mm socket and some Allen keys, I've stripped mine twice looking for a knock in my pedal stroke, turns out it was a loose crank arm. Plus Superstar will sell you each part individually.

If you want super bling Spank Spikes look the nuts, come in lots of colours and are very light and super thin, but they have weight limits, which isn't the end of the world - they're quite high, but doesn't exactly fill you with confidence and they're not meant to be the last word in longevity.

Another +1 for the superstar nanos here, coating is somewhat battle scarred function is still fine.

I wouldn't go for the Nukeproof. Mate of mine (who now runs the saints) had a pretty bad failure with some, left him trying to stay on with nothing buy a greasy axle for a pedal, thankfully it was on a climb.

They're actually meant to have the same internal structure as the Superstar (and Kona Wah Wah) so could just be a one-off, but that was a total confidence killer for me.

It doesnt seem like the Hopes are available to buy yet, they are listed as 2013, they do look amazing. What does 2013 mean in reality, would I need to wait until next year?

2013 in bike terms starts late August, gains momentum in Sept and in full effect by Oct. It's basically when the summer rush is over and the new stuff comes out.

That's mostly imported bikes though, for Hope, being a rather more sensible Northern British company 2013 probably starts 01/01/2013 as it should ha ha.

Most of the next year's bike stuff is normally available from October (ish) in the currnet year.

FWIW, because as Pjay says, anodising and graphics will wear off eventually - especailly after you've smakced them off a few rocks! - you might as well go with the Superstars to kick off with. Bling as the Hope's are, they all end up looking like they're been shot through an asteroid field eventually.

Thanks again, well although I am not really into bling I am not that bothered as I wont be MTB’ing with them so wont need to worry about hard wear.

I am getting my LBS to build me a super-light Mini Velo road bike and since I am only interested in flat pedals I want to continue the theme of having light parts, don’t see any point in getting pedals that weigh a ton after all the effort and money I have spent getting other light components put on the bike.

I run the magnesium DMRs, classic pedal without the fussy over cnc'd look of some. Smart.

Have Mag V12s on one bike and SS Nanos on another. The V12s are nowhere near as good. Just the fact that the Nanos have a larger, square platform makes them so much gripper and give you a lot more confidence over the rough stuff.
