With the nights drawing in, obviously lights are becoming a necessity.

On my road bike I had a cheap set, the front of which slid onto a handlebar mount. At a speed of around 30mph the light became detached, goodbye light, hello lots of parts.

So, for winter I am looking at a decent set of lights, but I am wary of how they mount, since if I spent lots of money on them I don't want to be losing the new set in the same way.

Ideally the light will be removable, and have spare mounts available, so that I can swap at least the front light between the bikes I have. (N+1 on bikes is fine, but not so on expensive light kit!)

I'm looking primarily for stuff for on road, lit conditions, with the occasional foray into unlit country roads.

Any recommendations.

Incidentally, I see many lights rated in lumens. Are there any limits on what is legal on the road? Some I see seem rather dazzling.
