look what I got!

I've been after a road bike for a while and finally stumbled across this. I have a Raleigh Equippe in the shed in bits that I have been trying to put back together for ages but never find time.

So, I came across this!












Its a Dawes Galaxy from the 1980's in pretty good nick. I am going to tidy it up and take the guards from around the wheels. It'll be getting used for the commute rather than my mountain bike which should make things easier.

Comments/suggestions welcome.

perfect commuter. Dont think it will ever be worth much and bike thieves will give it a wide berth. Get some tyres and brake hoods, bit of oil and off you go.

that's the plan :-) where do i get the brake hoods from? I'll be far happier leaving this at the gym than my genesis mountain bike.

That's a nice old thing. I'd be tempted to leave the mudguards on for commuting, unless you can be absolutely sure you won't end up riding in the rain. Nothing worse than getting bits of wet grit flung into your eyes.

That's a cracking looking machine. With that range of gears, once you're on nothing would get in your way. You could get to Tibet on that.

I'd second the keeping the mudguards on. Don't try and turn it into something it isn't. I've said it before and I'll say it again - beaucoup de points d'homme for riding an old steel bike....ahem.

Just get a new pair of these and swop them over. The clamp on the bars will be the same, so no need to change the clamp and undo the bar tape

Great bike, really are a fantastically comfortable ride!

I had a mid '80's Super Galaxy given to me a couple of years ago, sadly had to sell it last year as part of my 'bike rationalization' program enforced by HWMBO. Really wish that I had kept it now.....

Enjoy, I did many happy and comfy miles on mine with quite a few admiring smiles from other riders.

Echo what others are saying re mudguards - I wouldn't be without full-length guards on my commuter.

Enforced by who? Surely that should be an 'S' rather than an 'H', unless of course you prefer to ride the chocolate speedway?
