Which rear derailleur

ok after listening to my mate on advice over a rear derailleur and the dip-st telling me the wrong one to get - would this model be a exact swap for my old deora;

Or would getting the 'latest' deora (would imagine a straight swap as deora for deora) ( http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod... from the local shop for £45 be a better proposal?

As long as you have a 9spd shimano shifter either will be fine. Slx is a higher group set than deore but deore is perfectly good.

though just quickly, the slx doesnt mount inside the frame like the saints do doesit (the model my mate suggested i got)?s

THe SLX shown above is the "shadow" version. This mounts further inboard towards the wheel. It works in the same way but sticks out the side of the bike less.

I'm not 100% certain whether a shadow can be a direct replacement for a normal mech though. Someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.

Thanks for the help people, decided that the best thing to do will probably just ring up Evans and see what they say really.

Had a quick look on google images and seems to be the same type as my old deora...

No, not when it meant purchasing a new hub/rim/cassette just to make a derailleur fit it doesnt.

Anyway, are you stalking me?!?

I don't think a Shadow mech is a direct replacement for older Deore mech.

I think all Shimano Shadow mechs have direct 1:1 cable pull ratio. Older Shimano mechs had a different ratio (2:1 I think) so you'll shift two gears at a time.

You'll need a non-shadow mech. The second one you linked to will work.

Ill find out tomorrow as it should be arriving then.

As for it being a direct replacement, i think it should be as my old Deore is Mega 9 and this one is Mega 9 and the rest of the 'specs' match/suit what i had previously. The front Derailleur was replaced last year with a Shimano (not sure which model as just gave it to the Bike shop and said, fix it please) Mega 9.

Will probably go and get a new cable as well tomorrow, fit it all and hopefully not break it again

I've gone from a 2003 xt mech to a 2012 xt shadow, LBS fitted and it's so much better, it doesn't pivot at the drop out so provides a quieter ride.

Shadow is the same indexing as a standard mech. I run both types on various bikes. Shadow SLX seemed snappier in shifting than the M770 XT I swopped it for. Better cable run, tighter to the bike, so seems worth getting if you need to get a replacement mech.

No, just couldn't resist when I saw this thread in one of my favourite sub forums.

What's the issue with the saint one? If you've still got it I may be interested. Could you take a piccy and upload it (just gone to single front chainring, so could do with a shorter mech cage, which I think is normal with saint...)

There wasnt an issue as such its just that the mounting point on it wouldnt align up with the mounting point on the bike unless i modified it, plus im not sure if its meant for a MTB (im relatively new to modding bikes and just went with a mates suggestion) or if it is, not my bike.

Sorry fella, no can do on the pics as i sent it back to them asking for a refund. If it comes back with them saying its damaged (it wasnt) then ill let you know but hopefully ill get the refund.

OK, well it was a 'straight fit' onto the mech hanger (which is a lil bent but nothing major), now i got it all aligned and tweeked/readjusted the front as well but ive hit a problem;

• On the road, theres no ghost changing or anything
• As soon as i go on a xc route, itll start ghost shifting (adjusted it at the barrel that kinda sorted it all out but itd be fine for a lil while before ghosting) and on steep xc uphill sections, the chain would jump off of the front as i went to put the 'power' down.

Any ideas on whats causing this or is it just a case of giving to a shop and getting a pro to set it up?
