Recommend me a road bike for £400 ish

Just trawl gumtree/ebay for anything from a decent brand that's the right size. As long as it's got minimum Sora and a carbon fork then you're good to go.

In terms of new, there are a few bikes at that price point

Triban 3
Raleigh Airlite

Some people say the Carrera TDF is OK, but it doesn't have a carbon fork, is yellow and sold by halfords, which is more than enough to put me off.

I've just ordered a 2012 Felt F95 for £430.

Test a few out and see what suits you, there's probably no single "best buy" and different people will recommend different bikes.

Would that bike be suitable for someone who weighs 17st? Or would a hardtail MTB with road tyres be a better shout until some weight is lost?

If you have the MTB ride that, I spent the first 8 months on mine before I bought a road bike. Great fun and not that much slower either (hopefully as I get fitter it will be though)

indeed. its best to just stick with your MTB for now, especially if you plan to lose some weight, it requires abit more effort to cycle then a road bike. Let the road bike be a treat for when you reach your weight goal.

It was £487 at Wiggle, I then got 10% off using a Pizza Express voucher and 2.02% cash-back through TopCashback (may take a while...) making it a few pence under £430. However, looking at Wiggle today they're back up to £520.

Now I just need to buy a decent lock, decent pump, lock and cover for my old MTB which has been ousted from the garden shed, cycle computer, decent pedals, shoes etc etc
