new road shoes

Bit confused with road shoes and cleats/pedals and wondered if you could help me out before I make a muppet of myself in a shop full of people lol
New ride bike to be ordered v soon and would like proper road shoes and pedals to go with it, I currently ride my road bike with MTB Shimano shoes and cleats with double sided pedals. I dont fancy the idea of single sided SPD pedals and have been looking on line at Speedplay. Will these work with all types of road shoe including road shoes from Shimano or do I have to look at other manufacturers.
Any other pedals and shoes I should be looking at for comparisons.

I use the same SPD pedals and cleats on both my mtb and road bike,Shimano 520.
Pedals can be bought cheap if required (£20 ish) and you could just have 1 pair of shoes if you like.
However I have bought some shoes just for my road bike( make sure they accept SPD as well as other cleats,not all do) and I'm a bit unhappy.
My Lake mtb shoes are very stiff so you can't feel the pressure on the cleat. The new shoes seem too flexible in the sole and I can feel the cleat when pressing hard. Not nice......perhaps should have paid more!

Single-sided pedals are a non-issue: the pedals are weighted so that they're angled perfectly for clipping in every time.
Speedplay are more adjustable WRT float (natural foot twist without trigging an "unclip"), but more faff to install and set-up. Cleats are an utter arse to walk on (by all accounts), and are pricey.
I prefer Shimano, Cheaper, durable cleats that are easy to walk in. Easy to set up and the best bearings by far. Cheaper too.
