Just completed a 70k ride and notice I'm getting a pain on each leg, just below the knee on the outsides. I guess I need to adjust the cleat position, but what is likely to be causing this?

It *sounds* (I'm no physio!) like your IT band: a muscle that runs from your hip to just where you describe. The cause could be all manner of things, sadly: cleat fore/aft, in/out/ angle, feet support/movement, your riding position (saddle height, fore/aft) etc.

FWIW I had the same: a long-lasting pain on the lower outside on my right knee, that the day after the ride was downright crippling. Realised that I was overpronating ( wherein your feet naturally roll inwards under load (pedal stroke, or walking) but way, way too much!) and that that same cleat was set-up wrong (angle was way out, somehow).
Sorted some off-the-shelf insoles (best £20 ever spent), spent a few rides tweaking cleat position, and I was sorted. BUT, I was lucky, and what worked for me may not work for you.

Pain on the outside of the knees usually means that the foot is too far in when pedalling so you need to move the cleat inwards (and therefore the foot out).

Hopefully it's nothing more serious than a slight set-up issue.
