Trip computer trip times

I've got a Bontrager 5w trip computer. When I stop at traffic lights the total trip time also stops. This is annoying as obviously the shown trip time will be shorter than the actual time. Is this common to all trip computers and is there anything I can do (short of keeping a separate stopwatch running!)?
