I plan to use the Strava app on my phone abroad. Is there anyway to stop automatic uploading of rides? I don't want to incur 3G data costs by uploading away from a wifi spot.

Turn off data on your phone perhaps?

Yes I can do that, just wanted to know if it could be done in the app settings.

I can't see any way of doing it on the iPhone app other than turn off data roaming in the phone settings. P

Is there a limit on the number of rides on the free strava you can do before you have to upgrade

If someone 'flags' your ride it will disappear from the segment times until Strava review it. Flagging is the way of reporting the numpties who scoot along with their gps turned on while he bike is on the top of the car then upload their trace to Strava and surprise, surprise get a handful of KOM's!

Someone 'flagged' one of my only KOM's a little while ago, it was missing for about a week the re-appeared.

Have you set up a privacy zone? If that overlaps with the segment then your time will disappear.

After your post I was looking at a couple of old rides and all of my rides up Quarry Hill Lane in Marlow have disappeared, which aside from being a bit odd is a total pain in the arse as I had managed to get myself into the top 10%!!!! Cannot see any obvious reason for them disappearing - very odd.......

So on that ride, did you actually stop for 5 mins each time or did you not stop at all?

it makes me laugh when people's times are flagged up as cheating when the person in question is either a pro or a semi-pro. I wish people would spend a minute or so doing some research before the jealous streak kicks in and they throw a strop.

Totally agree, but it is usually quite obvious when it is a pro/semi-pro v a numpty who forgets to turn their GPS off! If a segment looks 'dodgy' I take a look at the rider, have a look at their usual ride times etc, then look at the ride (not just the segment).

I recently flagged a ride local to me when the rider took the KOM on Drift Road in Windsor with an average of over 50 mph! It is a 4 mile segment that the Windsor Triathlon passes over so has some very good times, but the current best is an average of just over 30 mph. When I looked at his other rides he rode once or twice a week and averaged 16 mph at best!

On closer inspection of the overall ride he jumped on the M4 at Slough and headed into London...........

I noticed wink

Not happy with you lot though, did my best time along there on Saturday and managed to claw my way into the top 30, only to be blown back down to 38th by yesterday evening!!

Unless I buy a aero bike, shed 10 years and draft you lot I don't see myself getting into the top 20 - think I might be able to claw my way back into the top 30 with a prevailing wind......smile

To be fair, that was part of a race, not a club run.

'fair enough, some bloody impressive times along there, 'specially considering the Windsor Tri passes along there!

I have no disillusions of adequacy, my ability to claw my way into the top 10 on Drift Road faded a while ago!!! Trouble with living where I do is that almost all of my local segments are very well ridden, and every now and again the KW's run a club ride through the area and re-set the benchmark for most of the local segments!!

I am still only riding solo, but a local shop has just started the process of forming a club and riding a couple of times a week so I am planning on joining a couple of their runs. Hopefully that will force my sorry arse to improve a bit!

We all know triathletes are slow on bikes though.

Sounds like a good move!

I've not been on a club run out there for a while, will hopefully do a few more when racing stops.

Bloody hell that's quick! More impressive are the rides up Hawthorn Hill (I created the Hawthorn Hill (Up) segment smile ) topping 400W.

7 out of the top 10 times on both segments posted yesterday. Us locals really thank you all!

Was any of it closed off to traffic btw?

I think the Tri goes in both directions, West-East first, then around the roundabout and back again - although I have absolutely no plans to swim, run and ride all on the same day so will probably never know for sure!

I can't stress how easy it is to go that speed in a big bunch. Not hard at all. The hill is only very slight, but again it wasn't too difficult. Also although 400w sounds a lot, for 1 minute its nothing, I've done 460 for 5 mins and over 700 for 1 minute, but you rarely need to use that power in a bunch.

No they don't close the road, just have marshals at junctions and motorbikes ahead and behind the bunch, and a few team cars too for the pro teams.
