Help with hood setup

So I have been riding the new bike without bar tape trying different shifter positions. I started out with them level and the hoods dead flat. This strecthed an already quite long position out too far. Now I have the bars down about 5 deg and the hoods upwards 5 degrees. It feels better and my wrists are fairly straight but I am wondering if there is a rule of thumb for setting these things up?

I need to get it sorted..help!

BTW shifters are SRAM red and bars 3T ergo's.

I wouldn't say there's a rule of thumb at all, although the typical angle is something like below where the hoods make a flat surface with the top of the bend and it's angled up a little. Some people run a steeper angle, but rarely less.



It's just a question of finding what suits you, so if you find a position that's comfortable then just go with it.

Agree with the above, there is no right.

I run mine down further, so there isn't a flat surface as much as there is a groove where the bar dips the the hood comes up, I quite like it.

But then I ride with a guy who's shifters are right down the bar and its all tilted downwards, super aggressive.

Your start point should be as Rouleur has said, then as another guy said go with what is comfortable. However you mention about reach, that could be because your stem is too long. Maybe get one just one cm shorter?

Also if you are new to road riding any position will be uncomfortable to start with!

Or go back to having them flat but put a 1cm shorter stem on.

Personally I don't think you can beat the look of classic bars, hoods set on the very front of the curve with the hoods flat and the bottom of the bars flat or 1 degree pointing downwards - kushty.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

Rode tonight and think the new position I hae set them to is the winner, feels comfortable and the SRAM hoods fit well. Now time to completely fk up the bar tape!
