C2W choice - £500 - £1k, Halfords

Need a bike. First job was a bike shop as Saturday boy, didn't earn a thing as it was all converted into a Trek OCLV with full Dura Ace and a beautiful Gary Fisher race BMX. Sadly both sold in my post student days.
I've been lusting on the retrobike classifieds, but in serious danger of budget creep, plus really can't justify spunking the sort of money I'd like to spend all in one go.
However, enter my friendly employer who runs the cycle to work scheme. Halfords are the supplier, and they give 15% off the purchase price before the tax benefits, so a 1k bike turns into £16 per month for three years, plus the relatively small payment after 6 years to fully own it.
So, options.
Quite like the look of the Boardman Urban - seems like a high quality frame, for a decent price, with good components. Carbon rigid fork isn't an issue, I prefer light over heavy, and would rather get some pace rc35s second hand than have cheaper components to get a middle of the road set of forks.

So, what do you think? Max value is a bag of sand, it'll be used by me and the missus on roads and light tracks. Too many hobbies plus family to be tearing round xc courses in lycra. Have too much experience of true loveliness to go any cheaper than £500, after all, my last bike weighed 14lbs all in!
Alternatively, I've been out of the race BMX loop for years - do Halfords have anything worthy? Never had a better commuter bike than my old GF with massive seatpost and low rise bars for proper trackbike riding position, Dura Ace 40t chainring and 12t rear sprocket. With 20in wheels that thing was useless for bmx tracks, but took off like a scalded cat, and maintained speed well...
