wonky duralier?? Help needed

Morning all...
So I've got to admit that I'm not at the top level of cycling just yet. But went for a ride with a mate last night and his (cheap mountain) bike chain kept trying to jump off the rear (lower i think) sprocket.
Being new to bikes I'm not sure 100% how the durailier is supposed to be lined up, but it didn't look 'right'. Every 50/100 meters they;d be a clonk as though the chain was trying to chagne gear, but was running quite hapily in on the main front and back sprocket. I thin it's the lower small gear misaligned, but if anyone has any other ideas???
Also his front gear does not change up or down...no mater how much i adjusted the gear cable. The 'fingers?' that force the chain to jump a got seem to have a very wide gap in them...much wider than the chain...is this right? surely it only needs to be just wider than the chain to not foul when the gear is selected and not trying to bump the chain over.
Sorry for stupi dhard to dianose post, but he's doing a 40k bike ride this weeke dna dn hasn't got the time (or the money) to tke it in for a proepr look so it;s fix it or borrow another bike...

Sounds like either the rear mechanism is bent, the hanger it's attached to is bent, or the chain is very worn. Could also be just poor adjustment but that would look obvious from behind.
The plates on the front mech are meant to be wide to allow for extreme chain angles eg. big front ring to big rear sprocket. For both gears I suggest you look at some YouTube videos as it's very tricky to describe what to do!

click into the highest gear, big front, small back and turn the pedals. you may need to physcially put the chain onto the big chainring and smallest sprocket.
the two jockey wheels in the rear mech should align with the smallest sprocket. if they dont and its marginal, try adjusting the H limiter screw on the mech. if its significant the rear hangar is probably bent.
you can also try a new cable before spending money but i picked up a Shimano Acera for SWMBO's bike (nothing but the best for SWMBO!) from Amazon for £15.

New tyres and put it back together - wheel was very buckled and ran out of truue really badly. Duralier had pretty much zero adjustment so couldn't work out why it was catching, but mate took it to bike shop this morning and 15quid to straighten back wheel and they said the chain was kinked...5 quid to adjust and it runs OK now aparently...
You live and learn - woul dnever have thought to check the chain for kinks.....

You would if you'd ever seen the amount of rust my wife allows to build up on her chain! I'm always faintly surprised that it doesn't present as one big, front cog-shaped kink every time she tries to pedal away after the bike has been left standing for a while!
