I fancy spending some money on upgrades, where to start?

Folks,

I have a 2008 Trek Series 6, which I love to ride around the local trails with my lad (who has an awesome Felt Q24 - a damn quick little bike!!).

My trek has Shimano Deoro group set, Suntour XCR lockout front shocks, Deoro disk brakes (all factory standard). I fancy making some upgrades to it. I am looking for a bit more speed and a bit less weight!!

Budget is around £400

Any thoughts?

Rockshox Reverb / other dropper seat post - £150 - £210
pair of Hope Hoops - £300 ish
Pair of XT brakes - £130 ish
Pair of tyres - £40 - 50

Some ideas above, I would be tempted to go for a pair of Rebas and maybe some XT brakes. Depending on if you still have OEM tyres on the bike they may be worth upgrading too.

I've changed the OEM tyres to a Schwalbe Rocket Ron on the front and an Albert in the rear. They made quite a difference tbh

By "Deoro" I presume you mean Deore? If so, nowt wrong with it, so money saved straight away
Forks: S/H Rebas from STW (£200ish), £100 getting them serviced by TF Tuned, new tyres (£70), then the rest (£30) on new outer/inner cables, pads etc, getting the wheels trued etc. The bits that make a real difference to how the bike "feels" (brake bleed, gear indexing, grease all the bearings etc) are free.

Then ride. And ride more. That alone will bring less weight (you) and more speed (you!).

The forks especially will be one hell of an upgrade, however, Deore brakes are actually pretty decent.

You can get a new set of Reba's cheaper than £300.

Every shop i've been into and every person i've spoken to when looking for hardtail has said that the shocks are probably the most important component on the bike. A decent shock will make a big difference, could even be the difference between falling off or not.

I'd go for an air shock if you can. Much easier to adjust to suit your body weight etc.

or for teh same cash the new bike thing works out much better value, i found this from bike-discount.de, yeah you've never heard of them etc etc, its called a Radon, I havent heard of them either but bike-discount are reputable and i've used them for groupsets in the past..... but that spec is just unfkingbelieveable..... buy one, although highly unlikely, if the frame is gash, just swop everything over onto the Trek or buy an on-one or something....

I'd go with one of the three options posted above rather than spending £400 to upgrade a bike worth £250-£300.

I recently gave my 09 trek 6300 to my dad the only change I made was fitting rockshox reba rlt fork and it totally transformed the bike. The rockshox dart 3 that was on previously was absolutely crap it barely moved.
