Brake pads worn out (part 2)

Now I'm feeling a little bit concerned.

Having had to purchase a modern training bike after my trusty 1980's Clements was written off last year by a bovine driving into it, I am shocked that tomorrow I will be putting the second new set of pads on it 14 weeks????

Now I know the weather is st and I ride alot of dirty lanes, but really are pads that soft nowdays that they wear out in 7 weeks, I always used to get about 9 months out of them when they were much thicker and dumpyer in the old days????

Use the tough ones, usually shimano branded ones last a hell of a long time. I go through the cheap ones in two months aswell. But they're only £5 for a set so not a problem really.

The bike came with SRAM Rival brakes, when those pads wore out I put a set of Shimano on but they have gone just as quickly. Have a set of cheap Aztec pads from LBS that will go on tomorrow.

I'm not that bothered by pad performance on the training bike but would like them to last longer.

Does anyone know of a harder pad that will survive wet muddy lanes in this bad weather?

I'm getting about 3000 miles of London commuting on a set of pads at the moment. Sounds like something odd is going on...

Possibly sounds OK in so much as thats how long I get from a set of road pads in the winter

Im using Swisstop mind you, Shimano last a lot longer but dont really do the stopping bit in the wet/crud/filth
(In summer I actually use Shimano and they last forever)

Obviously in winter theres a lot of abrasive action going on and I am (probably) happy to spend £18 on pads every few months for the luxury that their softer compound will actually attenuate my speed!

I put in a brand new set of sintered pads last week, bedded them in properly, then did 2 off road rides of about a total of 30miles, and yup, both sets now so worn the "seperator spring" is now doing the braking.............. rain + sand = pad death !

i used sintered pads from disco brakes and they have lasted really well.

Don't buy Goodridge pads. I bought some for my Hope calipers recently and they're horrible; they work but there isn't any "bite" when you first apply the brakes, just a sensation that you're squeezing the disc with a couple of bits of wood! I'll be going back to using Hope pads as soon as the Goodridge ones wear out.
