Up to £700, which bike for work commute?

After learning a harsh lesson in buying a second hand carbon bike from eBay, I am now turning to the cycling gods of PH.

So the basics are, 15.6 miles a day round trip, on main roads. 2 sizeable hills and 1 not so large, also a few speed bumps.

I have owned a road bike before, also have owned a Boardman hybrid. I was using the road bike more back then as I was into triathlons. Now due to bad knees I can no longer run so triathlons are out.

With this in mind, would I be best off with another hybrid, or should I go for a road bike again?

Not fussed about buying second hand either! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cross bike IMO - its what I use when commuting 13 miles or so each way...

I have bought a CX bike for exactly the same reason and it ticks all of the boxes!

Very quick on tarmac but equally capable nipping along towpaths etc, lower gearing than a road bike makes climbing a sinch - in fact I only ever drop off the top ring to climb off road. Highly recommend one, very robust, very flexible and a huge amount of fun!

I paid £1k for a new CAADX but I have seen 6 month old ones sell for much less.

Yup, I know mine has eyelets for panniers and mudguards but I have to admit I have never used them as I use a backpack!

You can buy my Schwinn Vestige for £700 if you are interested, used only a few times. Looks a bit different (bamboo fenders/grips) and rare too in UK and Europe if that interests you.

Cross bike? So what used to be called a tourer before everyone decided they were too cool for tourers.

I bought a late 90s Dawes Galaxy last year for £320 and it's fantastic. Quick, comfortable, strong, reliable, cheap.

Thanks for the tip Glen, I've just collected my Boardman Pro HT, retails at £999, after doing the above I paid £832.50.

Unfortunately it seems you can no longer get discount on gift vouchers with halfords, no option online and I tried in store today and they said I couldnt get any discount on gift vouchers
