What Bike, but no lycra

OK starting to ride to work, about 7 miles, takes about half an hour to ride to work and about twenty minutes home ( downhill) it's all on road b roads into the countryside.
Well into my mountain bikes currently riding a scott scale 30 to work, but a road, commuting bike is the way to go. have a buget of around £250 so secound hand . whats the best way to go full road bike (looks like back killers), commiting bike (how much slower)

I'd go for a road bike - your budget should get a decent used Specialized Allez or newer Carrera both of which have quite high front ends for their size (best to try). If you want a hybrid look for a Specialized Sirrus or Boardman - both are lighter & faster than other hybrids you could get for £250.

if you get a road bike you will really benefit from lycra bib shorts. On a road bike, far more weight and pressure will be over your pubis. Lycra shorts not only provides suitable padding around the area but also helps keep it all tucked out of the way.

Picture shamelessly stolen from Google although my wife does have the same bike, I'm very impressed with it, relaxed road bike frame/wheels but you sit on it as if it were an MTB, if I had a short commute such as yours I'd have one in a heartbeat.
Around the £400 mark new but I'm sure you could get one for your budget 'pre-loved'

I'm a mountain biker that sometimes commutes to work by bike - 21 miles each way. Was taking too long on the full suss, so put road tyres on the hardtail for a while, but still like to go off road on the hardtail and couldn't be arsed changing the tyres each time.
Ended up going to Decathlon and got one of these last year. Have already done 1200 miles without any issues, bar the odd puncture.
