After riding some track last year had my first crit today in 25 years (I'm in my late 40's). Took my training bike as the weather was wet, wet, wet.
Hog Hill 3/4's 9th (it was a tiny field - all I can say is cyclists can't be as tough as they used to be, it's rain and rule 5 applies)
First 25 minutes were tough as body got used to racing again but a few races and the speed/punch will come as well.
Well chuffed first race out to get a couple of points on the licence after all this time.

Got involved in a crash racing yesterday, wrecked a front wheel, clouted shoulder, luckily I landed on the grass verge, front of head dug into helmet when I landed also, it's a problem when you send 100 hooligans down narrow country roads !!!
anyway did an entry on the line at another race today just to test things out and get some confidence back, finished 4th from break of 7, so ok with that (1234 cat)

That's really good to start getting the regular results.
How many more points do you need for the second cat?
No racing for me this weekend but have first track league meet next Friday followed by a 56 miler 3/4's on the Sunday so will be right knackered this time next week
Thanks. I was pleased with yesterday. Rode off the front with two to go and finished well up on the field. Sadly I didn't know that 4 were up the road already! How many more points do you need for the second cat?

I need 15 points now, so looking good. Need to really think about what I am going to do when I get there as I'm not good enough in the hills yet for a proper 2/3 let alone e123.
What race are you entered in? I'm also doing one that sounds similar...
Bob,
That's a large field for the open road, here unless it's a big race they normally limit fields to 60 riders. Do they shut the roads for you in France with fields that size?
Top result the following day.
OKGO,
I'm riding the Fleche Welwyn road race on the Old Warden circuit just off the A1 at Sandy, Beds where are you riding?
I think you have just got to get the 2nd cat and then start racing at the next level up. For the first few races probably it will be hang on and be pleased to finish and then after that it should be fine. From my previous experience the only way to improve is to race people better than you because you work sooo much harder than you ever can in training.
For instance next weekend I know I am racing against people half my age and the majority of them a cat higher than me on my first open road race in over 25 years - it will be tough but after a few weekends of that I hope I will be in a position to dish out some of the pain.

Ah that brings back memories, I used to race all over Brittany, mostly 1st cat races, scraped a few top 10 finishes - absolutely loved it. Fully closed roads, whole towns coming out to watch, real carnival atmosphere and the racing so much quicker and more aggressive than anything I've experienced at home or the UK. Actually, just thinking about it makes my legs sore!anyway did an entry on the line at another race today just to test things out and get some confidence back, finished 4th from break of 7, so ok with that (1234 cat)
Yes the roads are always closed off, I just love being part of it although really getting a bit past it these days. But folk really encourage you, being a Brit the organisers sort of think it makes 'their' event a bit special. Not too many Brits over here doing the races at the moment, come on you young guys, give it a go some time, you won't regret it, or has been stated, forget it. Sore legs, yep, constantly !!
