Help!!! Chain Tensioner?
Discussion
I'm going to hijack this thread if I may rather than start a new topic. Can anyone recommend a retention device that will fit on a square taper equipped bike - most seem to fit where the spacer sits on an ext BB.
My winter bike runs 1x9 and tends to lose the chain on rocky descents. Now it's a lightweight XC build so I don't want half a kilo of DH spec kit. I want something that is light and will simply keep the chain from bouncing off the front ring when I'm in the higher gears when the going gets rough.
Any recommendations please?

Would this be any use? It's seat tube mounted. My winter bike runs 1x9 and tends to lose the chain on rocky descents. Now it's a lightweight XC build so I don't want half a kilo of DH spec kit. Good to hear rhino. I've only ever bought brake pads from them but I know a couple of folk that are using the Plasma chain devices without any problems.
I bought a couple of bits after a bit of research - all positive. A couple of tools and a rear wheel using their own Titanium rear hub. Wheel hasn't come yet but will post up my thoughts when it arrives. This -

@ £17, which is brill. Works Faultlessly. Why spend more?
PS - A 2011 Stumpjumper I would hazard is ICSG 05, not 'regular' ISCG. Different bolt pattern/spacing. Make sure you check.
My bike also has ISCG mounts but that linked above just replaces a BB spacer, and it works fine.

Just FYI any BB mounted chain tensioner will happy fit on a square taper BB. My winter bike runs 1x9 and tends to lose the chain on rocky descents. I've got one of the Superstar XCR Single Ring Chainguides - BB MOUNT pictured above on my hardtail ( Orange P7 ). Takes a bit of time to fit and set up but worth it as it works great.
For my full sus ( Orange 5 ) have have the full Plasma device as it shops the chain jumping around on the rough stuff!
Overall great kit and amazing value.

I've been using that exact device on my hardtail MTB (running 1x9) for a few months now - absolutely perfect. I didn't have it close enough to the top of the ring initially and lost the chain a couple of times, but since adjusting it it's not lost the chain once.
I previously rode 2x9 with a blackspire stinger and this is just as effective. Even though it works in a different way it still achieves the same result for me.
