Its probably been done to hell and back but......
I have been running around on a compact for about 7 months and then purchased a winter bike with std, Felt a bit odd at the beginning but I have got used to it. I have found a bizzare love of hills recently and it kind of made sense on 50/34 12/25 gearing. Over 45mph it is pretty useless so downhill etc is annoying sometimes but I haven't found it wanting during a race or club ride. I have considered going to 11/25 recently but now something new is being built along with a new groupset therefore I dont want to invest the wrong way...if there is one? I am considering 53/39 12/27 as the other option.
It seems I am in the minority in the club, not many are running compact and it's almost looked upon as the weaker riders option which I find fairly amusing.
I know its a very personal thing but I am just interested to see how many on here are run with one over the other or who have moved either way. If I go with the second option will the gaps be huge?

Just go with what your comfortable with! If you say it is good for you up the hills and your not running out of gears on the flat then it sounds perfect as it is. Instead of switching to a 53/39 maybe consider changing the inner ring to a 36 and see if you like it. Probably better than a 27 rear cassette as the 25-12 wil have closer gearing, but either way it's splitting hairs.
