So, yesterday I managed to pick up a bargain Edge 705 (with HRM)

As it was a bit spur-of-the-moment I hadn't done any real research on these before hand.

What is the best way to make the most use of this computer? Use the Garmin-connect site, or are there other sites doing more, or presenting the data in a better way?

What have users found as the best screen layout of the options available?

Lastly, is it possible to set a second user profile, so that my wife could use it to track her runs?

TIA

I have the Edge 500 for road/turbo trainer and the Dakota for MTB-ing - both great bits of kit.

I have 3 different screen setups for the Edge, first is for interval training and shows heart rate, time, riding time and cadence, second is for endurance rides and shows speed, cadence, time, ave cadence, ave speed and distance and the final setup is for the 'just ride' type of rides, shows speed, time, ave speed, cadence, ave cadence, elevation.

I used both Garmin Connect and Strava, IMHO connect is better for reporting/analysis - Strava is better for motivation!!

I find strava is more useable than connect, and is more fun too.

Yup, pitching yourself against others is a great motivator to train, and ride harder.

I decided to 'go for it' on the Pishill Descent in the Chilterns in Jan - head down and peddled like a madman for the entire 6 miles, slightly wet road and a bit of a crosswind for a couple of miles, I squeezed out average of 26.6 mph and currently sit in 15th place - the guy with the KOM managed an average of 30.1 mph in June, so I need to find another 4 mph from somewhere - which is a bloody good motivator to keep riding/training!

It's also a good way of gauging roughly how you are doing against more accomplished riders, I don't belong to a club and usually ride solo so don't really have anyone to compare myself to. Strava is a great way of figuring out how you stack up against others; more often than not the KOM's are club riders, racers or ride 10k miles per year! So, when you see you are only a couple of mph behind a well established rider it’s a good motivator to keep going and ride harder!

What is this Strava? Is it an alternative to Garmin connect? I hate that you can't compare against against friends etc on GC!!

connect.garmin.com is great for finding routes, Strava is also great but for different reasons. I use both.

It's like a Mapmyride/Garminconnect but takes it to the next level, it does all of the usual stuff but allows you to compare yourself against other riders on 'segments' of road or MTB tracks.

If you think that you are particularly strong on a climb, or super fast on a long flat section of road you can create a 'segment', anyone who rides it, or has ridden it in the past will be put into a table - you will either find you are a good strong rider, or it will crush you!!! laugh It will also automatically add you to the table for any existing segments created by others, it really is good stuff!

It also allows you to search for other local athletes and ride segments in any given area which I have found useful in order to vary my rides and introduce new climbs etc.

It's free for the basic package so get along and sign up!

Ok just signed up! sounds good! Looks like i'm going to have to spend a while poking around as it seems liek there's loads to explore!

The bit about segments looks really good! What are people's usernames on there then? I'll start following!

Thanks for the replies so far chaps.

I'd seen Strave mentioned on here a few times but not really taken much notice, looking at it just now it certainly looks good.

From my OP, does anyone know if it's possible to set a second user profile in my device?

I don't think it is possible to setup a second profile (at least I cannot find how to do it on the Edge 500). You can setup multi bike profiles, so setup a profile for HWMBO's bike, then when she has finished her ride she can use her GC account to upload the activity - as she will be using her account in GC it should adjust the hr zones etc to match her GC profile - I think . . .
