The two bikes you've linked won't cut it. Go down the 2nd hand route and get an established name, there is loads of bargains out there.
this this and a million times this.please do not think of it as mere snobbery, I do appreciate that to people who are not familiar with the sport £200 is a fair bit to spend on just a push bike (after all you can get a bike for £90 from Halfords right?), however bikes like the ones you linked to really are not worth having, especially if you want to go even kind of off road.
stretch to your max of £300 and find something second hand, I promise it will be infintely better than anything you will find brand new for £200ish

this and then look on ebay second hand. This is not bad.

Those Rockriders in the link above are well known as about the cheapest half decent mountin bikes you can get. They are £500 new. Unless there's something massively reduced then second hand is the only way to get something that will last for that amount for money.
Luckily cycling like a lot of other sports is littered with second hand bargains. People who have drifted from their new year's resolution or moved on to this years new shiny thing. Scan Ebay and the mtb forums (and know its been looked after) for some great deals.

As has been said half a dozen times already, don't touch the £200 bikes in your links - go secondhand and you will get a much better bike for your wedge!
I have just sold a 2 year old Felt Q220, cost me £450 new - sold it for £85! Other than a couple of scratches from being ridden around Swinley Forest there was nothing wrong with it, I had progressed to better spec bikes and no longer needed it! TBH I was after £120 but I needed the space and took the first offer I got!

ive spent literally hours looking and have seen that some decent bikes can go for less than £300
ive seen very good condition carreras, specialized etc...
I have about 5 ebay bikes im am keeping an eye on to try get a decent bike for a good price.
I did find some bikes for £400 - £500 brand new 2011 models still being sold that have good suspension forks and hydraulic disc brakes, and last years specialized mountain bike is £370
