LBS in Sheffield

Afternoon all,

Just wondered if anyone knows of a local bike shop in or around Sheffield that they would recommend.

I'm just starting to look for a bike with a view to but a new one in March but would rather go for a local dealer that get one from the web, I reckon they'll be a bit nicer to me when it comes to service time if I've bought the bike from them in the first place...

I'm a novice at the biking thing so if there's anywhere that has a good record with utter numpties that would help...

I've had a look round JE James in Rotherham before and it's a great shop with all you could ever need, and they've got one in Sheffield too. They sell a lot of high-end stuff but they'll be used numpties as well!

I'm prepared to be shot down for not recommending Arkwrights's Bikes or whoever, but for entry level stuff I'd go straight to Decathlon in the centre of Sheffield.

Staff on the bike dept generally tend to know their stuff plus the accessories are all there and not overpriced. Job done.

I also recommend JE James. For maintenance/repairs however, I highly recommend butterworth cycles on abbeydale road. His repair costs tend to be ~1/3rd less than decathalon!

In all serious - I've never been to down to the Sheffield shop but if there toeing the company line you should find some good friendly staff and a shop that is very welcoming of beginners with a massive range.

(I am an on-and off over the years employee of the Leeds store.)

That's great, thanks. 3 in the area should give plenty of choice. I'll visit them in the coming weeks and I've no doubt when I buy I'll be posting a pic!

I get my brake pads from them in bulk great deals online.

They have a solid reputation locally as well although I've never actually used them as a LBS so you might want to check that out.

Bit Late in on this but James's are ok for little bits but if you don't want to spend 2k on a bike they do have a tendancy to look down at you, I got a rockrider 8.1 from Decathlon, great bike, amazing spec for the cash and friendly, competent bike department, for entry level you can't go wrong, for big money anywhere mantioned above really (bar James's)

Here's my 2 penneth

For many years we in Sheffield have had a ste choice of proper bike shops, in no small part due to the now defunct JE James monopoly. Since not getting even a whiff of a discount when spending £2K on a bike, being quoted weeks for servicing when I am a regular rider and the lack of spares on occasions I try to give them a wide berth. To balance things out, years ago I used to get better service from the Rotherham branch, so went there more often than to Sheffield (it's 10 years ago since I last went there at least).

So now we have the Edinburgh bike Co, which is dear but the staff are friendly and enthusiastic, the choice is OK for bikes and good for kit.

I never got on with Langsetts so can't comment.

The guys at Bike Tree are ok as well and they have some nice kit, even if the choice of bike brands is limited.

For servicing I use Butterworths at Hillsborough. You can talk to the guy, he is straight and he turns round servicing and repairs quick. Sadly his choice of new bikes is underwhelming but it depends what you're after.
