Decided to go fit my new SPD-SLs to the Boardman tonight and on doing so, noticed that the crank was extremely stiff to turn. Odd, so unbolted it and found one of the bearings had seized (not been on the bike for 2 weeks only). It had been making a clicking noise beforehand.
Dig out the receipt......sold 29/12/2010.
So the warranty ended today. Whats the chances Halfords will entertain it tomorrow? SRAM stuff is all 2 years as is the frame but the rest (and I'm imagining the BB30 is 3rd party) is only a year.
Planning to head over tomorrow to see what they say. Not holding out much hope.

Interestingly a friends Boardman MTB got a BB replaced under warranty.. he'd only done a few hundred miles tops on it and the noise coming from the BB was dreadful! Clicking / cracking noise. Totally screwed. Maybe they had a few bad batches as, seeing that you were fitting SPD-SL's, yours must have been a road bike?
I had a BB replaced under warranty after 6 months on a Felt MTB at the local bike shop. Same symptoms, clocking that got louder and louder, took it to the LBS I had bought it from and initially they tried to blame the pedals, then the chain, then the cassette - after replacing all of them under warranty they finally relented and agreed the only thing left was the BB and changed it - hey presto the click went!!
Since when did BB's become a "consumable" ?
I "cough cough" have for instance a record bottom bracket (super record cups, ball races, lock ring, steel crank instead of Ti super record) that is super smooth absolutely silent no play in it and it has done tens of thousands of miles, things like BB's, hubs, headsets should be an investment not a throw away.

I'd expect a Campy Record BB to spin and spin, but a crappy square taper/GXP BB is unfortunately a throwaway item.I "cough cough" have for instance a record bottom bracket (super record cups, ball races, lock ring, steel crank instead of Ti super record) that is super smooth absolutely silent no play in it and it has done tens of thousands of miles, things like BB's, hubs, headsets should be an investment not a throw away.
Shouldnt be a consumable when its got less than a year and 1000 miles on it.
Anyway, couldnt get to Halfords today, so I rang them to be told that because its a day out of warranty (12 months it carries), they couldnt do anything. They didnt know what part it was, nor what price, and were generally unhelpful. I'm not sure the lad on the phone knew what a Boardman was.
I acknowledge that a years warranty is not a year and a days warranty, but looking on the net, these BB's have had known issues and have been replaced by Halfords.
Needless to say, an email has been sent to Halfords Customer Service asking if they could provide some advice. Also highlighting the inadequacies of the staff at the local Bike Hut.

Is it a GXP? They do tend to go pretty quickly. The issue is you can't prove you haven't been merrily jetwashing it every day since you bought it, and I guess that's what they'll say.Anyway, couldnt get to Halfords today, so I rang them to be told that because its a day out of warranty (12 months it carries), they couldnt do anything. Still, if you can get a replacement then good luck to you!
