So we've had electric Campy, and it appears Shimano are now going 11 speed

i am yet to be convinced that 11 speed offers much to be honest.

its like gilette's eternal quest to determine just how many blades it is feasible to encompass within a razor... only 5 you say?... pah....

I do agree to a point but what it does is reduces the gaps in between ratios on wider cassettes - for example 12-27 and 11-28.

On a 11-23, I agree - I don't see the benefit

But how often do you find yourself thinking - I wish I had a gear between the one I'm in and the one above or below. I know we all tend to have an optimum cadence, but things are starting to get silly in the world of bikes.

I've been through so many ISIS BBs and External BBs but my winter bike fitted with a 15 quid square taper BB is the same one I've had for 10 years. I was also told today by Hope that my 6 pot Ti brakes are no longer supported so they can't service them. When brakes that expensive become short life limited items (especially given their purchase price) then the world of biking is heading in the wrong direction in my opinion.

The same can be said of cars though, the M5 has 7 gears and the Lexus ISF has 8. Surely 5 or 6 should be ample?

yes I asked an Aston factory bod why they fitted a six speed gearbox to the V12 Vantage: he just smiled and said that nobody would buy it with a four speed.
