Who rides with a helmet camera?

Im thinking of asking Santa for one but Im not sure where to start looking

Something light enough to be mounted on a helmet and weatherproof too

It would be used for commuting and to capture my next descent off Galibier

What have you got?
What would you recommend?

I guess 4h of capture would be plenty and for the commute something to run continuously but save the last 15mins of anything just in case

Purchase possibly dependent on how this thread pans out?

I've not done any commuting with a helmet cam however I've used a GoPro for off road use. It would be a bit bulky for an everyday cam though.

If your after something small search on eBay for Mini DV cam or Helmet cam. You'll find loads and they start from about £12. I've mounted one on a car before and the quality/sound was good.

I use one in my car offen due to the epidemic of idiots and road ragers while the world is highly strung at the moment. I would use one on my bike if I'm riding in daylight but as my commute at night this time of years there's little point.

... but it's a bit awkward to mount because it "stands up" and looks geeky. After trying it once, I reviewed my movie and deleted it. Not terribly exciting. Probably of more use if you're a commuter I'm sure (not me).

I think this one looks better but is double the £12 I paid for mine.

Mine is useless in low light. I suspect all of these cheapies will be too.


Actually, I quite like the look of this one - the LCD screen might make it easier to understand what the damn thing is doing.

You can pick the contour HD up for £120 now from Amazon, retail was £325 IIRC.
Go pro's seem to have a slightly wider angled lens than the Contour, but the Contour is a lot more compact.
I bought a 16GB SD card and will record about 8 hours worth of footage.

Get one from the OH, similar to the one posted above, but the Contour GPS.
Has the pro of being able to use bluetooth android phone as a viewfinder/to do setup (camera mode) plus it has built-in GPS to register your trajectory.

I'm going to use it on the snowboard, and after that maybe on the bike.
