I have Rockshox Recon forks (the Gold TK Solo Air versions), with a lockout mounted lever on the fork crown.

To implement a remote/handlebar switch I need the switch, a cable, a cable retainer and the grooved disc that the cable wraps around. I also need a return spring.

So the question... This return spring... is it contained under the grooved disc or is it actually inside the fork itself?

You can buy a Pushloc/Poploc kit which contains the lever and cable but no disc or spring. Presumably this requires that your fork already has the disc and spring implemented but how would you use this without the remote kit? My lockout lever is not sprung. It simply pushes one way or the other.

Thanks.

Jimbo.

In the fork itself, IIRC, within the damping/Motion Control gubbins. You get a new one of these (avec spring) when you purchase a Poploc/Pushloc kit.

There are two types of kits - those with the inclusive motion control, and those with just the lever and cable. Thing is, they seem to be the same price (£109) so it could be that they are the same thing but lazy websites only show whatever pics they have available. But if the lever/cable **is** sold separately, I presume it's for forks with the feature enabled but just needing the remote part. I was sort of hoping that because I've already got the lockout feature, I could just add the remote. The Rockshox webby itself suggests my fork is Pushloc compatible but doesn't explain further what's required.

I think you're right though but I can't see why anyone would just need the lever/cable upgrade.

This document should help some...

Edit: The pop lock levers are st, the top of leg mechanism is much better and more reliable. I have a spare lever if you want it fr the cost of postage, as I took it off as it was unreliable. The return spring is too weak, and any dirt will stop the lockout snapping off when the lever is released.

Thanks for the offer but I have a Pushloc lever already which looks like it addresses the concerns you've got with the Poploc. I reckon the cable is no different to my gear-selection cables, so I **thought** was just missing the grooved wheel and the cable retainer to make it all work however I didn't figure on the spring being inside.

I don't think my forks have motion control - instead they just have lock on/off. However if it's as complex as opening them up, I don't think I can be bothered... just yet. Then again, I wonder if mine have the spring inside but just disconnected. Unlikely I suppose...

Thanks anyway. That's a great guide. thumbup

as above. dont retrofit a remote bar mounted pop lock lever. they are st, they are made of plastic, they fail when they are dirty and they are a waste of time.

post on the singletrack wanted ads and see if somebody will swap the damper over. Most people usually want to go the other way (poploc > crown mounted).

Whilst I concede that the Poploc isn't a terribly robust-looking item, what's the problem with the pushloc? It's only the lever itself that's plastic (in the case of the Poploc) or is there something fundamentally wrong with the system itself?

I think you're right though but I can't see why anyone would just need the lever/cable upgrade.

IIRC Rockshox did used to sell "Poploc enabled" forks, which had the spring-loaded damping cartridge already fitted, but...no lever! 'twas a PITA as sourcing a lever (without everything else) was an utter ball ache.

Really? What a perplexing company.

Oh well, thanks for your advice (and everyone else). I have a Pushloc lever and cable. I'll hold onto them for now and see if can't source the remainder at a lower price than the £109 I seem to be finding by Googling. I must admit, I would find it useful as I've just started trying to get fit by going for a high-impact half hour every evening on this bike. It's a harder bike to cover distance on than my city-bike (it's heavier and the fat spuddy tyres slows it down) but I've found a nice route that's about 50/50 paved and unpaved. The fork smooths out the worst of the unpaved sections but there are several transitions from paved to unpaved over the journey so to be able to lock/unlock on the fly would be useful. I nearly splatted myself last night trying to do it by flicking the lever on the fork crown. smile

Thanks.

P.S. I wonder if there's a market for a grooved disc and an external spring for this type of thing. As you need a cable retainer anyway, I can't help thinking it would be an easy thing to engineer - although possibly a magnet for crap and such I suppose.
