Eeek, that could have been nasty! What brand/type of tyre was it?
I had that happen in the '80's while doing a paper round on a Raleigh Chopper. Pulled an epic skid (back pedal brakes rock!), and watched what looked for all of the world like a giant black hubba-bubba grow through a hole in the tyre - before exploding and leaving me a good couple of miles from home with a half full bag of papers!

They were Kenda, back wheel went all wobbly then locked up, I had that happen in the '80's while doing a paper round on a Raleigh Chopper. we were just watching it grow then BOOM
We had a good few miles to go, i carried on but he had to get a lift home..
