I bought a cycle computer from Lidl yesterday. "So what"? i hear you say. Well the "what", happens to be the most evil feature known to mankind... The average speed arrow. yes

This dastardly feature is simply an arrow that points up if you're going above your average speed and points down if you're below it. Now as I do most of my riding across the fens there are no traffic lights etc to slow the average speed down so it's easy to maintain a good average. The only factor that affects your average is the wind.

So what happened today when I commuted across town? Yes, the bd arrow kept pointing down. weeping Why do I have a horrible feeling this little arrow is going to have me riding at full chat for evermore frown

The average speed arrow? The arrow of death more like.

What makes things worse is that when the arrow isn't there you are riding at your average speed, which is always below what you expect, so you push harder!

So it gets you know matter what!

I got to a point of covering the speed up with tank tape and using it just as a odometer.

I assumed that arrow was to indicate if your speed was trending up or downward from your average for that particular ride frown now im depressed

um... it does confused. If you're doing above your average speed, the average speed will slowly rise. Or do you mean you have one of the GPS ones that you can program rides on to, so it knows previous averages for the whole ride?

They are evil buggers though.

HHHHMMMMM. I have a basic CatEye wired computer, and frequently fall victim to the miserable little arrow that mocks from beside the current speed in the display. No matter how hard you try to stick to your plan to 'just go for a gentle ride at an easy pace' to recover from the previous night's balls out effort, the horrid little 'arrow of death' mocks you until you are left with no choice but to MTFU and show the little devil who's boss. End result is yet another balls out effort resulting in abject misery and general knackerdness from trying to keep the little blighter pointing up rather than down. Try as I might, I can find no way of switching the thing off.

If you get a Garmin Forerunner etc, you can play a previous ride against your current ride .. it'll tell you how far behind (or ahead) "you" are. Excellent feature.
