Cutting ties with SA... why not?

A bit harsh, you might say. I just find dealing with any part of the South African government and the very typically African bureaucracy is about the worst experience I've had since I was plucked from the birth canal. I'm seriously looking at relinquishing all ties with South Africa, in particular: giving up my South African citizenship.

If anyone cares to enlighten me as to why I shouldn't, I'd be happy to listen.

You've not been here long enough to realise that it's no different here. Same st, different smell that's all.

I personally am sick of hearing South Africans sgging that country off when they have yet to realise that there is little difference wherever you go in the world.

Every country has it's problems, yet some have convinced themselves that anywhere is better than SA.

Everyone has a right to an opinion but I'd bet that if you save this thread and read it again in 10 years time your view will have changed........

As a South African that has lived here 16 years and done well for myself and my family, I still don't believe this country is the promised land.

I was indeed born in SA. I will agree that it's a beautiful country but it's the current government which is fueling my feelings towards the place.

(I'd say more but I have Baby TS on my lap which nakes typing difficult.)

Titan, while the current SA goverment is by no means perfect it is a hell of a lot better than the last one. As South African we need to remember things like the broedebond, pass laws, job reservation, rampant corruption etc of the past are not much different to what we are going through now. But at least we now have a much more transparent goverment and a free press so we hear a lot more about the goings on of goverment. But we cannot fool ourselves into believing the past was any better as it simply was not.

While there are plenty of different arguments regarding past and present governments, and which is/was better, one factor which repeatedly presents itself at the forefront of all and any considerations is that of crime and security.

Living in Cape Town, I believe that you have things much better than most other regions of SA. Consider yourself lucky! The rest of South Africans aren't in such a fortunate position and feel the impact of this government's actions (or lack thereof!) more than what you probably do. The apathy by the government of the voters' plight is sickening. Turning a blind eye doesn't even begin to describe it.
