Breakfast club... anyone notice a change?
Discussion
I have been to these meetings since they started and noticed a real change now. It was a get together of lots of unusual cars, rare cars, ones that kids (and older kids) would want to see. A good chance to have a chat about the cars etc.
Today seemed to have changed. They had a German theme, fair enough, but surly that means "interesting and rare car that also are german" It seems some really great cars (such as an amazing ford thunderbird )- were put out of the way and in the overflow car park because it wasnt german. Meanwhile I saw loads of new golfs, slks, polos etc, which ok might be nice cars but you can see those in any adsa car park any day. I have two german boring cars that I wouldn't think of taking to the breakfast club just because they are german.
Also, a load of the cars were for sale - including a couple of Audi dealers selling there R8s. Again, nothing wrong with selling your car, but ebay is more the place. I must be getting old!
Discuss ! (the goodwood bit - not me getting old!)

I agree. Although I'm, a fan of Porsche & BMW (oh ok, and Audi, Merc...) I found the more commercial/restained nature of the meet today to be unfortunate. I hope it (the nature) doesn't continue.
It was also a shame that there weren't more rare cars there, still it's an event that has its display vehicles arrive on the day if the owner decides to feast on organic burgers, no?
Like the motor BTW, saw you in the carpark.

Paul,
Like you, I have attended most of the meets and to start with you just got the 'theme' cars together with some rarities too.
Although it has grown somewhat, the essence of the whole meet has somehow become diluted for me. I do love to see unusual cars as much as the other pertolheads down there but having shopping cars as prime exhibits doesn't do it for me at all.
PS - I must be getting old too....!

I was really dissapointed yesterday. Not in the cars on show but in the fact that it's just got too big now.
I can see admission fees coming into play soon due to the additional staffing required to marshall each event
Are you sure you're not bitter just because they didn't let your car into display!I can see admission fees coming into play soon due to the additional staffing required to marshall each event
Sorry about having to leave you on route. I can assure you however disappointing the show your journey was better than mine. I will still be cleaning vomit off the cerb for years to come.
Couldnt make this one, but i have noticed this slowly happening...maybe something as 'open' as german cars will always have boring run of the mill stuff!
Maybe some petrol heads should volunteer to select which cars should park in which area...
And as for police monitoring the exit, that means no swift exits....RUBBISH!!!

Having been there yesterday, i agree that it seems to be drowning in own sucess, last year cars were parked in gravel area behind the grandstands for display, now spread over 3 plus areas.
I arrived at before 8.00am and was waved straight thru to the pit area, whilst there were spaces on the track by the pit lane, looks like the marshalls decide who parks where, seemed to have little or no knowledge of cars involved.
Still it was a great day, and best weather so far.

There's 2 guys who have a list who decide who gets to park on the pit straight, it would seem. Strangely Brown and I were watching from the grass embankment pits side and this seemed to be the modus operandi. Quite amusing when the second (and third) Audi R8 arrived to be told 'sorry, you're one car too late, we already have one of those, please continue straight over'. The guy has a nice stash of one liners as at a previous meeting he declared one car 'too boring' after a little bit of deliberation to go through the tunnel into the paddock and turned the driver right into the carpark. To be fair, he was correct!
Unfortunately, as per the norm with Goodwood events, it has become a victim of its own success and has outgrown the old 'chaps out for a bacon roll' type feeling to a full blown 'car show/meet'. No fault of theirs I don't think, they just know how to latch into a successful concept. For all of that, I do think they have reached a good compromise to deal with the numbers who now turn up.
And lets not forget, it is still free.
Was thinking the same thing - this event is becoming way too overcrowded and commercial Lord M (no doubt this is your plan)- didn't enjoy Sunday's meet ("event" as much as some others!
Perhaps when the weather changes later in the year we'll get back to a smaller crowd of hardened petrolheads.

You can't beat the Italian or Supercar themes to bring out the exotica.
Yer, got to agree on that one, they have been the best so far for me. (Best of British came a close 3rd even though it was raining!)Wasn't just the cars though, seemed to me on Sunday the atmosphere was all wrong?!?
What really done it for me was the P plate Corsa parked on the gravel area, what was that all about!!
Looking forward to 'cooked in 60 seconds' though, should be some real treats for the petrolhead.
Must remember though, it is still free

yep - next year will be there with my Fiat Panda 4x4 - which will be for sale, and I will be selling second hand engine parts from the boot!But....to be fair..... True, it is free event which is good, and if the "gone in 60 secs" car list turns up that will be great and well worth seeing......
It's not really free. The cost of entry is bringing an interesting car along. There are a few more run of the mill cars that get plopped into the overflow but the majority of attendees bring something for other people to look at. If a cash fee was levied at the gate, I'd give it a miss.
I spent probably the shortest time I've ever managed at the meet this month. It was awash with 911s, CLKs and er, the occasional MINI! Snoozefest.

Yes it is.You can choose to bring a car which may or may not get you into a specific car park/area, you can choose to have some breakfast, but entry to the 'event' is free.
Having been to most of them, I can safely say that there has been a marked change in attitude from some of the attendees. There was one guy getting quite wound up at the Supercar event when he wasn't 'allowed' onto the pit straight, only into the paddock (not to any Goodwood employees/volunteers I hasten to add, just to his circle of friends) and it seems to be happening more and more. The early events were more relaxed, no doubt due to the smaller attendance, but there was certainly less of an attitude from some people who felt they had a right to part their cars in a specific place. If I can be so bold, it all felt a bit more old school and gentlemanly. That's not to say it was better, it was just different.
Safe to say, I have a very pleasant time of it, get there early, have some brekkie and then leave just before the hoards arrive. Nice way to start the day, followed by a little bit of hoonage on the meandering way home.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that a whizzy car would be the only way to get in through the gates, but if we all turned up in Mondeos it wouldn't be much of an event (apart from a Mondeo spotter's point of view!). In this respects it's a self financing 'show' and the finances are in the form of interesting vehicles.

Indeed, totally agree, it wouldn't be the show or event it is, but maybe the people who (did?) attend make it what it is even more than the cars? An interesting debate there! In this respects it's a self financing 'show' and the finances are in the form of interesting vehicles.
I must admit to being a former member of the Mondeo owners club though (although the damn thing caught alight whilst I was driving it.)
