2022 Goodwood FOS virgin

Hello all,

I am looking for some tips and recommendations for a FOS virgin.
There are a group of 4 of us going for my dads 60th birthday, we have passes for the 4 days.

Is there any tips or recommendations for someone who has never been?
I am looking to make it as special as possible for my dad, is there any events/specials I can get into?

Do I need to take a camping chair? LOL

Get round the stalls and displays on Thurs/Fri before the big crowds hit at the weekend.
If you are going to be watching the hill action at all, get to where you want to be with time to spare - the best spots get busy quickly.

Are you camping there or driving each day? If driving make sure you get there as early as possible to avoid traffic/parking 50,000 mile walk away.

Be prepared to not see everything, there is so much to do.

Get the shuttle to the rally stage, its worth queueing for.

Check out the performance parking, sounds silly but you'll see alot more than you expect.

Get the program with headset, the commentary is actually really good.

I normally try and get to the car parks between 6.30-6.45 then the gates open at 7am. You can get a load done before the big crowds appear.

As above, try and get most of the static stuff done on the Thurs or first thing in the morning as they can get really busy.

I always get a grandstand ticket, this year I've got a grandstand for every day. Nice to be able to sit and watch the cars go up the hill from different stands and just chill for an hour or two. If the budget doesn't stretch or there's no more stand tickets available, a camping chair is a good shout.

I take lunch in with me, because I'm a cheapskate and also can't be bothered to queue for 40 mins for expensive, average food. The exception is sometimes a bacon butty if I've missed breakfast.

Wouldn't bother with the stuff like helicopter rides, crazy expensive for a 10 min loop around the grounds.

We will be driving in everyday (staying locally) so will make sure we arrive nice and early (Not too many beers the night before then)
Good shout about the performance car park, we will take a look. The headset is also a good call.

Are there any events or dinners we can get into? I know they will be for VIP's or drivers (We do compete in Timeattck and SLS) ?

AFAIK events/dinners etc are mostly invite only/VIP as you say - I would ask whoever is on the door what their policy is and take proof of what you say (If you can). Its also worth noting in previous years if you goto a stand of a brand of car you own with your key (EG - Audi stand with your Audi key) they will let you into an 'owners' only section - what you get in there varies . When we got into Audi we got a drink for free and a good view of the hill with seating, Id imagine BMW/Mercedes offer slightly more. I know McLaren has a bar/resturant in their section but never been in there.

Yes turning up early is a must or youll queue for literally hours, be prepared to be quite tired there is ALOT to see and its all walking.

Cartier Style et Luxe by the main house is another must

I do wonder if Mitsubishi stand will be there and if so, that may work as we have a Evo 6 Race car.

Ive never heard of the Cartier style et Luxe but I will certainly check it out.

I dont think there is a Skoda stand this year lol, think there may have been previous years though.
Ive only ever seen Misubishi up in the rally stage to be honest, but might be worth a chat

Id never heard of it until I went, they have some serious metal in that section

I’d say if you are there for 4 days, take your time. You can burn a lot of time (and energy!) moving from one area to another so maybe pick one section to do each day, relax and take it all in. A lot of the hillclimb runs are repeated over the days.

Check out the programme for anything in particular you want to see and plan a little around that, bearing in mind any red flags on the hill will cause delays.

Worth checking out the paddock staging area where cars sit for a bit before heading for the hill, but it gets busy especially when people hear the noisy stuff being fired up 😁

Sunday is the hillclimb final which is well worth grabbing a seat and watching.

Stay hydrated especially if it gets hot.

We are camping for the full 4 days at Goodwood itself rather than fighting the traffic.

A few questions, if I may?:-

Is there a farm shop or supermarket close by? For the obligatory BBQ’s and to make sandwiches/snacks for throughout the day.

I’ve heard you can book a full long weekend pass for the Goodwood spa, my son is 19. Has anyone tried it? Think it’s worthwhile?

What are the showering facilities & toilets like on the campsite? It wasn’t cheap, so hope for a bit of civility!

Train to Chichester and then get the shuttle bus from there into the site, Ive never done it so you'd need to go on the Goodwood FOS website to see times/prices etc

Unfortunately Ive never camped so cant answer those questions, same with the spa (although Id imagine its pretty good)

In terms of food/shopping - theres a few supermarkets a couple of miles out, however getting in/out of the site can take quite a while so id take as much as you can to avoid having to head out. If you head towards Chichester there is a Sainsburys on one of the main roundabouts - from memory it'd take about 10 mins to drive there on a normal day

^^^ Bear in mind that there is an RMT rail strike on Thursday and Saturday so the train timetable will almost certainly be disrupted on those days. It will probably affect Friday and Sunday too.

There is a bus that goes from Portsmouth to Brighton, via chichester if you get desperate. Bus station is opposite rail stn. A taxi driver would know the short cuts to get in

When you leave the station at Chichester there will be buses waiting - I think it was about £3 for a return ticket, they run all day until about 8pm IIRC. Really easy last year, I think I'm going to do it again this year so I can have a few beers
