I really don't want to appear to be the Goodwood whingemeister, but have they had the special foot-shooting jig out again?

Yesterday's announcement of a new ped crossing (bridge obviously!) at Madgwick... surely that ruins one of the best locations on the circuit for viewing? I suppose it depends on angles, but as far as I can imagine, it is going to block a prime viewing point.
I understand the idea is to get the infield just before Madgwick better used for viewing and access to the assembly area.

The web site does say "Careful consideration of the bridge location has been made to ensure the superb views of the cars racing from the Startline remain."

It has been so long since I have been, I can't think how this will look!

I’ve seen some argey bargey there over the years, that would make me think very carefully about putting any sort of structure there. They’d need to consider drivers sight lines as well. I wouldn’t fancy going flat out into Madgwick if I wasn’t confident that the exit wasn’t blocked, before I commited.

Good point... I hadn't seen it from the driver's point of view (though I have done a few laps).
As drawn in the illustration, it looks like a bit of a disaster waiting to happen. Surely it would have to have a massive span to have the piers behind the tyre wall in order to be properly safe.

For the other plans.... I really hope there is a mini-skylon in the Festival of Britain section at Gate2 (I seem to remember they did Festival of Britain as a theme before though - probably 2011?)

yes.. that sketch is architecturally accurate...

hehe

It will need to "vault" over the spectator fences on the banking for a start...

Another pedestrian tunnel rather than a temporary bridge would probably be a better option, but that would be a huge investment, will this also cut down on the flying even more?, I noticed that they have stopped people accessing Lavant corner until the first flight has landed now

Well that sketch has it smack in the middle of the run off for a start, so I don’t think that will be happening...

More logical is either further round after the exit or at the end of the pit straight before the corner starts.

I realise the illustration on the web site isn't supposed to be exact!

I just can't see where it can go without it being a BIG problem to viewing.
As above, across the track before the corner would kill the view from Madgwick to the start line, though it would be the shortest route and away from the run off area.
Anywhere else, it has to be either in the way for the racing, or in the way for viewing.

For what it is worth, historically, I don't think there was ever a bridge over the circuit either.

Not really seeing what problem it is there to solve... never have I thought when I am at Madgwick, "I would like to get to the assembly area but would have to go through the Members' tunnel - Oh that is just too far to go".

They’re not going to erect it at the end of the runway as that would restrict flights in and out for longer than the event. I guess it will be before you get to the runway which I’d have thought would cut views despite what they say.

I welcome more track crossing locations as it can be hard and lengthy to get across at times and I hope this is just to test the waters prior to investing in a tunnel.

Too far around the corner puts the bridge the wrong side of the main runway which would almost certainly be a problem - though peds do cross the other runways I suppose.

Once they sell a few dog rolls and coffees that should cover the cost of a tunnel

All joking aside I doubt there is much profit in what they charge.

You’ve not seen their accounts then ...

Laughable to suggest they don’t make a profit.

I didn’t say don’t make a profit. Pretty sure we’ve discussed the accounts on here a few times and the farm and estate pretty much chews up any money that’s made? I also imagine this last year has destroyed any money they did have in the bank. I think they lost £1 million this time last year as the members meeting was all set up and ready to go.

From seeing images on GRRC I’m guessing this will allow more retail openings in this area.
I’m really quite pleased this area will be opened up.
The best viewing point is St Mary’s anyway, much closer to the action.

I’m fairly sure the bridge is being driven by Covid and the need to keep people spaced out.

That was my thought too, the changes this year are all to allow extra distancing.

I’m sure the DOR has looked at plans very carefully and knowing how he feels about the circuit and the whole ‘experience’, he will not be doing anything that seriously compromises the view from one of the best corners on the circuit.
It is actually a bit of a hoof from the paddock side to Madgwick if you want to see the cars form up first- (10 plus minute walk even through the GRRC tunnel) which means you’d miss half of the race in theory so this might alleviate the problem slightly.

Think I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve seen it and see how it ‘works’.

That sketch has got to be from early April, hasn't it biggrin

For a start the pedestrians trudging to the bridge from the outside of Madgwick need to keep an eye out for GT40's approaching sideways-on ...
